What do you think? Is there a shadowy group (or groups) that determines the course of events around the world? Or is it the province of the tin foil hat-wearing crowd?

Everything boils down to "follow the money".

Or, if you prefer, the Golden Rule: he who has the gold...

Bilderberg.

David Rockefeller:

"We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine, and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during these years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supernational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries."
If powerful people didn't say things like this, then you wouldn't have conspiracy theories.

It sounds to me like you have read The Creature From Jekyll Island, about the birth of the Federal Reserve. It was established not by the passage of legislation by Congress nor by executive order from the President. Just the richest families in the world sitting in one room talking about pooling their resources together rather than beating each other over the head in head-to-head competition, which was costing them all money. They decided that making the pie bigger amongst themselves and shutting out anyone else would be a better way to go.

It was no coincidence that we got the income tax at the same time as the Fed...

IMO, throughout human history there has always been an elite who feel they should rule all. I also feel their depravity has been underestimated, and their actual power overstated.

Actually the Federal Reserve was indeed passed by Congressional legislation.

Yes it is.

The country had what could be termed a central bank and an income tax throughout its history.

The reasons behind the creation of the Federal Reserve and the Sixteenth Amendment were different and didn't occur at the same time. It's just coincidence that the Sixteenth Amendment was finally ratified at the same time as the Federal Reserve.

Sorry, guys, there's no "Illuminati". Just a constant cast of ever changing characters looking out for their own self interest just the same as most everybody else. It just so happens that some people have more money, thereby more influence, than others. And even all of those rich, powerful people have constantly shifting, and differing, agendas.

I disagree, I do not believe the truely rich and powerful are constantly changing.
