I'd love to read some opinions from the forum regarding Payton's performance this year, both in terms of his offseason maneuvers and his coaching in this young season. Obviously, the team is rolling, but that might not mean his performance is beyond reproach. So, where, beloved SR denizens, on the Rod Marinelli-Bill Walsh gradient does Sean Payton currently reside?

Also, any word on the extent of Bushrod's injury? He could come in handy when we play again next Sunday.

Payton is growing up...becoming more of a mini-Parcells (in a good way).

The fact that he gave up $$ to get Williams....the fact that we run the ball now. I'm down with Payton.

He certainly showed great patience and restraint today, in that he was willing to play field position, ball control football. This said, it's probably this first time in his tenure here that he's felt he's had the personel on both sides of the ball to do so. On the downside, it made for rather high anxiety viewing on television, no?

In the press conference, Payton said Bushrod sprained his ankle. He stated Bushrod could've come back in the 2nd half but he just kept Strief in to give Bushrod's ankle a rest.

He recognized that Brees wasn't going to be able to sling it all day and win. We ran the ball and he had faith in our D and special teams. I'd give him an A so far. I like how he gets at the refs too.

Payton has done a much better job so far of utilizing the run game and also being patient in close games and not doing something "wacky" that puts the Saints in a bad spot. The game today is an obvious example of that but don't forget the Eagles game that was close at the half before the Saints blew it open at the start of the 3rd quarter. Payton did a good job in restraining his calls there as well.

The one piece of advice I would have for Payton thus far? Take the page in the Saints playbook that has the screen plays on it, tear it out and burn it.

Remember guys, this is just Sean Payton's 4th year as a head coach. I feel like he, just like drafted rookies who actually play the game, had to mature to become a dominant coach. Today, he has solidified something I've noticed in the Lions game and the Eagles game... he is maturing and learning more about himself and his own team, and using his newfound knowledge to beat teams by 20 points on the road. I am very impressed and look forward to years to come with SP as our head coach.

We actually run the screens decently since Payton has been here. Not always successful, but often enough.

There was a time when we could not run a screen. Period.

He seems to have a more mature game plan now. He recognizes what's working and sticks with it. He doesn't seem to be forcing certain play calls the way he did in previous seasons.

Payton has been about as perfect as you can be so far.

He gave $250,000 to Gregg Williams to improve the defense.

When he's gone for it on 4th down, it made perfect sense (short conversion, right part of the field).

He's stuck with the hot hand in the running game and rode them the rest of the way (Bell, PT).

He's picked the right times to use the trickier type of plays (the first TD last week).

No dumb challenges.

He didn't try to pass 40 times today when Brees was off. In the past, he would.

He continues to hold players accountable but doesn't completely tear them down.

Anyone complains about Payton at this point is just looking for something to complain about.

no bad challenges so far. A++
Indeed. I'm always amused when I see him go for the red flag. A good friend coached for a rival team and it was his responsibility to make the final call, from the coach's box, regarding a challenge. I've posted in the past that all NFL teams assign a coach "upstairs" to do this, because as far as I know, from friends in the profession, this is the case......but I'm really not sure the Saints and Payton follow this model-he's thrown down some crazy challenges

Agreed. I'm really impressed by his patience with the run game, as are most of you. But seriously the balance that we've had this season, I believe it's 105 run to 98 pass -- or something in this general area -- and that's amazing. Also, he's not trying to force Reggie. But the thing that makes me the happiest is that he hasn't been trying to get too cute with his play calling. He's going with things that work and not things that show his offensive prowess. I've always been a Payton supporter, but this year, so far, has been his best IMO.

I think the biggest thing he has going for him this year over previous years, is the Defense. I think his trust in Gregg Williams is absolute. He then has time to focus on things like clock management and overall strategy.

But more than anything, the Saints are just good this year. They made great free agent signings, great draft picks, great coaching changes and have great players in all parts of the game. And that is just a good organization from the bottom up.

He is reminding me of the 2006 season when, regardless of what player messed up an assignment, he got on them. I felt he backed off on the gameday accountability the last few years. Some of them guys need that type of motivation, some dont. This was the first time that I heard, in public, that he challenged the 3 first rounders on the DL to have a big game, and they did. CG made a play & pointed to SP, like is that what you wanted?

I agree he is growing up as a HC. He won us that game today by sticking to the run, the D & field position game today.
