I am suprised that I haven't seen this mentioned and if it has, I apologize in advance but did anyone notice that when Jenkins forced the fumble on the punt return that he had an inadvertent face-mask on the returner?
I think his initial swipe, hit the face-mask and then the ball but the face-mask disoriented the returner and helped cause him to dislodge the ball.
To a lesser degree, it was very similar to the Reggie facemask in last year's Vikes game that caused him to fumble.
That being said, I for one am happy that it was a No-Call but had that been our guy on the receiving end of that, I'd have been miffed.

There was a facemask rule change. Do you remember when there used to be 2 varieties of the penalty? There was a 5 yard penalty and a 15 yard penalty. Well, the league decided to do away with the 5 yard variety. The rule is if it is not a bad enough facemask to call a 15 yard penalty i.e., a swipe or not grabbed, then it is not a penalty.

Now, with that being said, it was such a small swipe that it could've been accidentally overlooked by the official or he could've simply chosen not to call it because it wasn't significant. I guess we'll never know.

Good point Saint31. I didn't think of it that way. Ok, carry on. There is nothing to see here folks.

This is incorrect. They did away with the 5-yard variety in order to reduce facemasks by increasing the penalty. Any facemask, serious or not, is of the 15-yard variety. They don't just ignore the former 5 yard variety now.

I don't remember the play exactly, but if Jenkins grabbed his facemask at all, it should've been a 15-yard penalty and first down Bills.

SaintsFanInLa after watching the replay it seems as though he grabbed more of the chin strap than the facemask. if you have access just watch it again. i could be wrong but that's the way i saw it.

I wasn't so much a grab as it was a swipe. IIRC.

Look, that play encapsulated 40+ years of what usually happens against the Saints. Bad no call, plus a ball that actually bounced into our hands. Boo freaking hoo. About 100 more of those in our favor and the Universe will have finally caught us up.

He grazed the facemask, but didn't grab it.

That being said.. I was frantically looking for a flag just knowing it had been thrown.

I'm sorry sir but you are wrong.

Rule 5: Goodbye to the 5-yard Incidental Facemask- A quick grab of the facemask is no longer a punishable offense. Grab hold and try to unscrew his noggin, it’s still 15 yards.

just watched the 1st half again - saw this play, looked at it again and i'm pretty sure he got helmet/earhole and not facemask - though when i watched it real time yesterday i was sure it was a facemask

I just re-watched the play too. Watching it in slow motion, you can see that he did not touch the face mask. Although, in real time speed, it appears that he does.

Yeah, the intent was obviously to go for the ball I'd say. The facemask strip against Bush by the Vikings was a totally different deal, where the defender facemasked with one hand and stripped the ball with the other, IIRC.

This is the rule and definitely was a face mask. But it didn't get called so who cares.

Also to further the argument the NFL is only interested in the intentional face mask and they do not care about incidental contact or swipes unless it consist of twisting turning or pulling...

Tell the officials from yesterday that. They gave us 15 yards on what was an incidental facemask on reggie.

He was turning the corner, I believe it was the outside backer not named Kawika Mitchell.
