here's what i think is the problem national media has with the saints - they can't craft a narrative:
- they were trying with the "second coming of the greatest show on turf"/no D; then we get more yards on the ground than the air???
- brees is not not a media QB (by his choice as much as the fact that he's not the "ideal" qb type they all love) - he reads from the crash davis interview answer guidebook
- reggie is our only marquee player and he falls between beast and bust - what's the media to do with that?
- many of our best contributors are late round draft picks or UDFAs (people that didn't have much college notice)
- last week's star might not produce anything this week
- on D we're good at most/all the positions but no single group is stellar
- shockey & hargrove aren't behaving shockey & hargrove like (as the media would like them to)
- coach is more "think-y" than "yell-y"

the saints are a TEAM - and our fantasy football/solo stats media doesn't handle that well
to talk about the saints you have to talk about actual football plays - there are no soap operas here, no prima donnas
what's the national media to do?

I think this is one of the best posts I have ever read since joining SR.com!!!!!

You are absolutely correct...think about the Tennessee Titans last year...it wasn't until they were like 8-0 before anyone even noticed that they were undefeated and a very good football team...Media needs headlines, and except for Brees throwing 9 TD passes in 2 games, there were no other headlines...

edit: sorry forgot to rep you

Great post! I agree with everything you said. But you forgot a huge one:

- small market team. As was alluded to, the Titans had to go undefeated halfway through the season before they got any pub. We are in the same position in that, as a small market team, we won't get the props that we deserve until our body of work is undeniable. Beating the NY teams and the Pats will go a long way towards that.

At the end of the day, if we keep winning, who cares what the media thinks?

You gotta love how SP has developed the culture of this team. You don't have to have big name recognition to make plays/win games. Enter: Thomas, Bell, Moore, Billy Miller, Colston (rookie season), Henderson, etc.

It seems like sports media would love to be all over someone like Shockey having a big game because his name alone should be a difference maker. They can't wrap their heads around these wins being a complete team effort.

That being said, I'm glad Brees had an off-day yesterday. O-line/RBs proved to be dominant, defense dominated, special teams made plays. Media seems to be lost because they don't see how Brees having average performance = a 27-7 victory against a decent Bills club.

You are exactly right. Look at what most "experts" are talking about from our game: TO's press conference. That's right the big story is the guy who did nothing and waiting for him to chew up another QB.

Great post guys, I get hung up sometimes, not so much on the lack of coverage, but the lack of respect, that to me bits more than all the rest, but it's true what has been posted, we just aren't their flavor & that's ok.

You know, up until this season, I would get more & more frustrated about it, but with the roll the Saints are own, it doesn't really matter, in fact, the effort the media goes to avoid talking about us, is actually kinda cool when you think about it.

With all the love Revis is getting with the Jets, how come it's never mentioned what shutted down TO all day?

Not to mention any names, Greer, but as long as his name as is not being said, he's doing a heck of a job.

You are right but this can be overcome with consistent winning. Being in the playoffs year after year and continuing to throw for high yardage and rush for big plays will eventually get us there.

You can't ignore a team that is always in contention. It won't come overnight. Absolutely spanking one of the New York teams would start the exposure you are looking for.

Great post!!!!
Personally the lack of media love, doesn't matter to me. If the team keeps playing one game at time and wins all the way to Miami, that is all that really counts. I think the guys know they have something to prove but only to themselves. They really wanna win this year and it shows. They have what it takes to go all the way, if the media rides with them, thats great! If not, the Who Dat Nation will be there with them like we always have been and I think that means more.

I think all the things OP says are true but overriding even those truths is the fact that the Saints have never done anything besides being noteworthy for losing. It's hard to shake *Saints fans* of the "same ol' saints" mentality, much less people who are predisposed to not caring about our little corner of the world.

I would agree with everything but the bold. Payton was yelling so much yesterday. I was laughing so hard.

+rep. I like how you didn't say "im so mad at ESPN for not showing Saints respect we are one of 7 teams that are unbeaten!!" Like most of these youngins!

I still, on the other hand, do not know why all of this matters. I agree with everything you have to say, but why? why? Why do we need the respect of the national media to be a great football team? When we got 10-0 (if we do, hopefully) they will be on our bus. Until then, lets just fly under the radar, and got into the Bye week 4-0.

The Jets are the toughest test yet, lets get past them guys, and we will be seeing our names ALLLLLL over the TV and Radio.

It's not so much the respect, but it would be nice to see a little more discussion about the team we follow. I just get tired of the same old regurgitated stories week after week.
