Aaron Kromer deserves just as much KUDOS as Gregg Williams if not more.

I am a huge fan of Gregg Williams and the Saints finally have a defense and a good one. Yea Top 10 (right now) even. With the addition of G. Williams there was also the addition of Jabari Greer, Darren Sharper, Anthony Hargrove and the subtraction of Jason David, KK and Josh Bullocks. All and all some significant changes.

On the other hand.

2008 Oline: Jammal Brown, Karl Nicks, Jonathan Goodwin, Jahri Evans, Jon Stinchcomb

2008 RBs: Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, Deuce McAllister, Mike Bell

now

2009 Oline: Jermon Bushrod, Karl Nicks, Jonathan Goodwin, Jahri Evans, Jon Stinchcomb (Jammal Brown out til mid season)

2009 RBs: Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, Mike Bell, Lynell Hamilton

One could argue that the Oline is actually less talented with Bushrod instead of Brown and yet an Oline under Doug Marrone in 2008 couldn't run block to save their lives looks unstoppable in 2009. The only real difference Aaron Kromer.

I actually heard from one of these TV "experts" that it doesn't matter who the Saints put in the backfield that back is going to get 100 yards, that is quite a compliment to the Oline and its coach.

SO I SAY HATS OFF TO Aaron Kromer.

.

Can't really argue against it. You could also make the case that Evans is the difference. After all, he is the lead blocker. He has Kade a lot of key blocks already. But I'll agree with you. Kroner is probably the bigger difference maker.

I agree. The Oline has improved leaps and bounds since last year. It really doesn't matter who runs the ball we can get 100 yds on the ground. Add to that the excellent pass protection and suddenly we have the best Oline in the NFL?

It is definately a plus to replace Deuce with Hamilton. If this guy can learn to block he will be pretty good. He definately can run.

How are we suddenly able to run block? It's like night-and-day, and it doesn't look scheme-wise like we're doing anything different. We're doing the same mix of zone and man-blocking which has been unable to open a hole over the past two years. Coaching matters, but I don't know how you improve your run-blocking this amount without major personnel turnover or a major shift in philosophy. Anybody have a clue if we're doing something different?

SP just gave mad props to Greg Johnson on WWL. He said the guys on the D-line are responding well to his coaching.

Think it's Bill Johnson, actually

He does seem to be a huge upgrade over Orgeron so far

Jamal Brown isn't in there.

Great thread. Two unheralded addtions that are paying off. I never really understood how Marrone's OL's could be so good at pass blocking and couldn't run block to save their lives. It isn't like we were using undersized, quick O lineman. Brown, Nicks, Goodwin, Evans, and Stinchcomb are all average NFL lineman sized (if not bigger than average). Something wasn't right that they could be so successful at one and not the other. Seems Aaron Kromer figured it out.

I really thought Ed Orgeron was going to be a big improvement. When he wasn't I was pretty disappointed. He got us Ellis and McCray but that was about it. DL Coach Bill Johnson has so far been everything that Orgeron was supposed to be.

You're joking, but I think Bushrod may be an upgrade - in the run blocking department - over Brown at LT. In a perfect world, I'd love to see Bushrod stick at LT with Brown sliding back over to RT, where he was an absolute beast and an unstoppable road grater. That probably won't happen because moving to RT would come with a downgrade in pay and Brown won't take that. I love Stinchcomb for his athletic ability, though. He gets out there as a blocker on outside plays very well. No matter who's lining up where, there's an undeniable improvement in our run blocking this year. It might be coaching, it might be players, it might be scheme. My money's on simply having a different attitude, one brought about from having a defense with attitude on the other side of the ball that's infectious. Whatever it is, I'm just happy it's going on. We'll lose some games along the way, but having the ability to do EVERYTHING as a team well makes us a very tough matchup for everybody in this league.

For my money it is the maturity of Carl Nicks and Jahri Evans. Those two guards not only protect Drew Brees from ANY pressure up the middle, but the just maul people in the run game. Watch Jahri Evans sometime, he is the best guard in the NFL right now.

Also, our passing game is recognized as the best in the game right now and we're known to throw the ball no matter the down and distance, so there's no way any team can ever load up the box against us.

I agree about Jahri but Nicks is rapidly becoming dominate as well.
