LSU is rated fourth in most national polls. But that is not the odd phenomenom. Whats odd is that Tiger fans across the land seem to think LSU is overrated at #4.

In other words: Too much respect.

Its the first time I can ever remember a consensus of LSU fans thinking their team is ranked too high. Will we ever be able to whine about the media again? :idunno:

:ezbill:

I think they're rated just fine.

I also think that, unless they play better, nobody is going to have to worry about it in eleven days. :mwink:

The pollsters long ago gave up trying to decide who was actually better. It seems now they rate teams based upon their recent strength, high profile players, and previous seasons finish and cycle teams up and down based upon wins and losses with little regard to how the team actually performs. Occasionally one winning team will leapfrog another because their last opponent was higher ranked than the others but there is not a whole lot of evaluation that goes on in the process... and why should there be, the AP is a meaningless poll so its not like what they do really matters.

Oh and I forgot the most important part, if they hype us they get better television ratings and more exciting talking points on their shows with #4 vs #18 than they would with #15 vs #18... and even if we loose the game next week will be something like #15 vs #1.(If we won #4 vs #1 which would be an amazing ratings game)

I think the problem is fans remember last year.
We started 4-0 last year as well. The reason we are highly ranked is because we came into this year with:
A fairly high ranking based on blasting GT
The perceived talent on the team
Some highly ranked teams have continued to fall

So far this year, LSU just hasn't played very well. The offense has shown that it can hit some big plays. But, the offense has looked out of sync and the OL has appeared to struggle.
The defense looks somewhat improved, but still a work in progress.

The next few weeks may truly be make or break for CLM. After going 8-5 last year, I don't think he can afford to have a repeat mid to late season meltdown again. Last year, he was given somewhat of a flyer because of the '07 NC and because of the RP situation.
I don't see him getting the same flyer this year. Not that I see him getting fired for a poor season, but if it happens he'll be squarely on the HOT SEAT.
By the same token, we're 4-0 and finding ways to win. Win this Sat and everything changes. Lose this Sat. and talk about Gas hitting the fire, just watch.

^ This. I've always wondered how teams can be ranked, considering the turnover in college ball each year, before ANY of them have even played a real game? That blows the credibility of the AP poll, IMO, especially since so much emphasis is placed on media exposure and reputation.

I think a lot of LSU fans are seeing the Tigers benefit from exactly what we've complained about with other teams in the past...the ranking determined primarily on where they started before the season began, and not much attention paid to how good they really seem to be. Time will tell, I agree, but so far this #4 team looks a lot weaker than previous years where they were ranked lower at this point in the season. Reputation and preseason ranking have a LOT to do with that.

No doubt.
