And he made some good points about these roughing the passer penalites on the quarterback. I see why they wanna protect the quarterback, but it's starting to get ridiculous. As a defender if you inadvertanly touch the qb's helmet trying to bat the pass you get flagged (hargrove against buffalo).

Dilfer was pretty much saying how these rules are way too subjective and quarterbacks are grown men with a jersey on just like the rest of the guys on the field.

Cowherd thinks we should protect the qb b/c they're the biggest investment and attraction in the nfl. He says nobody would wanna see the Pats-Colts if the starting qb's were Jim Sorgi and Brian Hoyer.

What's your take? :idunno:

My take is that QBs getting hurt is part of the game and will still happen no matter how many rules are in place.. It is far too subjective and will artifically change the way teams draft, NFL recordbooks, and HOF entries.

Doesn't anyone remember that the entire reason Tom Brady became annointed is because Bledsoe got hurt? It's the natural course.

they do need some xtra protection because they are very vunerable while sitting behind the line scanning the field for the open receivers...saying that, the helmet slaps are rediculous, especially when it is on an accident and I agree with the ruling about diving at their knees...but when they call the penalty they need to make damn sure that there was a penalty. They are men just like everyone else...but lots of times they get hit like a punt returner that cannot call a fair catch....how cruel would that be lol.

The rules are fine. The interpretations of the rules by each ref vary and are typically horrific.

I think you have to protect the QB's and all other players on the field. The game would not be as compelling if many of the top players are routinely out. That said, they have gone too far with some of the penalties - notably roughing the passer.

I think the in-game penalties should be lessened (i.e. don't call the penalty quite as much), but the off-field penalties should be increased (fines and 1-game suspensions). You can review video during the week, easily identify the worst infractions, and punish the players appropriately.

Exactly.. Injuries progress the game, and allow others to either step up or stop getting paid due to not being good enough.

My thing is that if you are going to call a lineman for going after a QBs knees while the QB is in the pocket or even near it, there should be a review to see if that lineman was pushed into the QB.....Yes, this is ridiculous, but so is the plastic bubble that they are putting around the QBs. Why bother having a backup QB if they are untouchable??

The rules are fair.

The regulations are fair.

The competitive balance is fair.

The thing about all of these penalties is it makes it difficult for defenders to play. Guys are out there thinking too much instead of reacting. When you're running full speed and trying to react based on years of playing football and you make 1 little mistake of a tackle, it results in a 15 yd penalty and can change the course of the game.

And that's in addition to all of the other penalties the NFL has implemented to slow down defenses.

Good idea, poorly executed. Not sure why it's so hard to get every ref to understand there has to be some form of intent behind these hits to warrant a penalty. Can't believe I'm agreeing with Ray Lewis but QBs should just wear special uniforms that trigger a Roughing The Passer call when touched. A favorite quote of mine rings true for this QB controversy, "He's a grown *** man!"

Trent such a hard thing to listen to but his rant on Romo, Culter, and Rodgers being to 5 qbs is crap line was. :smilielol::spit::smilielol::spit:

Favre is lauded for his consecutive starts streak, but in a few years he'll be passed and passed again because QBs aren't going to be touched...

I was surprised that Grant did not get called when he made that sack.

i think a Brees/Hoyer match up in the Superbowl would be fantastic.
