Saints Vs. Giants General Discussion (Week 6) (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, I'm a newbie here, but here are my thoughts.

First, the Giants are a good team. I see either a close game, or a complete blowout (13+ points) win by the Saints.

The defenses will play a big role in this game, and I really liked what I saw from our boys vs the Jets.

What I'm liking most about the Saints right now is how so many people are playing just "balls out" football. What do I mean by "balls out" football?

examples:

1. Sean Payton is calling aggressive plays and really taking risks. He can do that cause he's got confidence in the entire team. He's going for it on 4th down, he's taking the long shots, he's using a variety of rb's, etc.

2. Sharper is knocking down the interceptions, and the D in general kicked the Jets butt; they really answered the call. The sacks, bat-downs, and hits on the QB were awesome.

3. Bell and PT are running well.

The team is playing to win. I remember the years of Jim "field goal" Mora, where we only played to get field goals and basically lost every game in the third or fourth quarter, and it feels great to have respectable coaches and a quarterback calling the shots now. I think the entire team is better because of the coaching staff and Drew "I come to win and kick a**" Brees.

My only worries are that with the Jets (and even the Lions to some degree) we did not completely dominate the other teams. We won, but our ability to move the ball was hampered a little by the Jets. Basically, that means that our D has to keep up the good work if we want to keep winning. What we really learned vs the Jets is that it is possible to slow down our offense.

While 20-32 for 190 yards and no touchdowns may seem pedestrian for Brees and Co. I would hardly call the offense being shut down. You may want to look back at the game, aside of the 4th and short stops the Jets came up with, the Saints dominated the ball. After the two touchdowns by our D, the only thing the offense had to do was get first downs and run down the clock. Yes, there were no big plays by the offense, but as was said by Coach P, they went in with a gameplan, and executed it perfectly. I think the scoreboard had more to do with controlling the game than the Jets D "shutting down" the Saints' O...

The Jets have one of the best defenses in the league!!! They were supposed to slow down our offense, the problem this year for these defenses is that we have a REALLY GOOD RUNNING GAME!!! Do you know how hard it is to stop a team that has a great running game AND a great passing game??? You have to sell out for one to stop it...the last two weeks the defenses sold out to stop Drew and the passing game...we in turn killed them with the run...now if teams decide to sell out for the run...Drew will begin torching them...

We're not unstoppable, but with the opportunistic, scoring defense we have right now, we're PRETTY DANG CLOSE!!!

Also keep in mind that we could have scored at the end of the game if we wanted to and made it 31-10, but instead kneed it a couple times. That doesn't show on the scoreboard.

Payton's confidence in our D is much more apparent this year with how many times we've gone for it on 4th down.

I don't see a blowout by either team that week. I think this is probably one of the most even games that has been played all year. It really could go either way. Both sides are solid and have QB's who can take the game over if need be.

NYG have some physical guys in the trenches so its going to be a rough game.

27-20 Saints, I believe.. I may change it to 27-17, but I think that's about it.

Two points: our defense has to play at the level its been achieving through the past four games, especially in the Jets game. Really, if Sharper replicates the performance he had against Eli in 05, it's gonna get ugly for the Giants.

Plus, the Giants are ranked pretty far down in rushing defense (19th), playing Washington, Dallas and Tampa.

I also have a feeling our passing offense will get back on its feet, with Brees moving the field with the offense, though I hope we can maintain a balanced run game like we did early in the season to compliment it.

I agree, when the offense needed a drive to run clock or a score to regain the spread it managed. I wouldn't put too much into the score other than the defense had beaten Sanchize and the offense was just doing what it needed too to preserve the win.

OK, I called our defense winning the Jets game, and Im calling our STs winning the Giants game. SP mentioned on WWL that 1 thing he will be doing during the bye week is tweaking the return units by scheme. I think in the Giants game, with the extra emphasis given to the return units in practice, we will break a long PR or KR. Also, the G-men are not confident in their PK. I can see a blocked kick or missed FG being a game changing play.

Last time we spent extra time on STs in practice was after the Detroit game, on coverage units, we have been spectacular since then.

I think good KRs, good PRs and Morestead will help us win the field position battle, which will be key in this game.

Good thread. The bye week comes at the good time. The Saints have injured players like Bushrod, Clancy and Bell who need to get back into the mix. Now that the roster has stabilized, it's time to get the special teams going--great point. The other aspect of special teams is the placekicking dilemma.
The going for it on fourth down results IMHO from two things: lack of confidence in Carney's long-range leg and a better defense. Fortunately, the strategy has not seriosly backfired yet because no games have been lost.
The most worrisome thing is that there will be no respite from now on. If there's a serious injury, there are no more bye weeks until after the end of the season. The good news is that the teams the Saints play after the Giants don't exactly have stellar records.

you ever been playing Madden and the guy your playing always goes for it on fourth down when he shouldn't.....thats Sean Payton. But yes it does help if you D is good.

I am cautiously optimistic -- I think we can play with the Giants but they are so much better then the other teams we have played --

On offense They have an experienced good QB with some good receivers; a large pounding running back and a big offensive line --

On Defense they are good without having to go for broke (which is the big difference in them versus the Jets defense we have played) --

Lets not fool ourselves -- this is a very good balanced team that is much better then any other team we have faced this year -- when we beat them we become the creme of the NFC -- the team to beat --

It won't be a blowout, but we have a very good chance to beat the Gents. Their secondary is not as good as the Jets, and with Lance Moore getting more time to reintegrate into the offense and everyone else on O being healthy (including the return of Bell and Bushrod), I see us having better offensive production in this game than against the Jets. Our D will get its toughest test of the season and will probably give up a couple more TDs than they did against the Jets, so our offensive production will be important. We either have to win the ST battle or break even. And, as always, winning the turnover battle is key.

Our offense was effective in the Jets game. We drove the ball down the field and had that great series with the Meachem pass and PT TD to get the cushion we needed.

This game will be similar to the past two, IMO. Our D will have to be tough and hopefully we get another pic 6 from Shaper, courtesy of Eli. And special teams.

Just because the Giants haven't played anyone strong this year, doesn't mean they can't win those games. They are a bit banged up, so that's in our favor. Plus the game is at the dome.

My guess is 24-17 Saints.
