This story has been floating around the net for the past day or so, but this report comes from a person who is in a position to know such things. As I know very well (having been gulled into wrongly announcing Khamenei’s death a while back), it is easy to be misled, and Khamenei has had previous medical emergencies in the past, and recovered, but the source is excellent. Nonetheless, it’s always smart to apply the Reagan Caution: Trust, but verify. I’m doing my best.

Here is what he/she says:

Yesterday afternoon at 2.15PM local time, Khamenei collapsed and
was taken to his special clinic. Nobody – except his son and the
doctors – has since been allowed to get near him.
His official, but secret, status is: “in the hands of the gods”.

Well, here's the thing..

And this is all speculation but I've read a few scenarios that I think are probable.

For one, it was believed that Rafsanjani would be elevated to Ayatollah. For the US, that would be a great thing because he is a moderate. However, Rafsanjani was a supporter of the protesters after the recent elections. I've read that he has fallen out of favor and is unlikely to succeed Kahmenei. Instead I've read that a coup by the Revolutionary guard is possible. If that comes about, you could definitely see Ahmadinejad be seated as a dictator with no "Supreme Leader" to check him. IMO that would be much worse than Khamenei. I think AmADinnerJacket is a total nut that would nuke Israel at the first good opportunity.

I doubt any faction in Iran would like to see Ahmadinejad installed as "total" dictator without the check of the clerics. They'll install one of the hardliners to take Khamenei's place to keep their circus going for a little longer.

And blackadder is right. Despite his babbling, Ahmadinejad (or anyone else, for that matter) is not going to build a nuke and then fire it off, unprovoked. At anyone. I don't care how many times he's said "Death to Israel" or some variant.
