Once upon a time, the people of the United States had a motto, it was “In God we trust”. It is on our currency, on our government buildings, and was in our hearts. It seems more and more these days we have forgotten that important little sentence. More and more we are depending on the government for guidance to every little problem we have. In fact, we are letting the ACLU and the courts take God out of our lives, at a rapid pace. They started with our children, with no prayer in school and as I'm writing this opinion piece, the ACLU is fighting very hard to remove the crosses from the Arlington Cemetery in Washington, as well as, “In God We Trust” from our currency and federal
buildings.

Our forefathers knew it well. They trusted God to get them across an ocean on sail boats
smaller than Nancy Pelosi's yacht. They came to a new promised land to start a new life where they could worship God however they wished, without persecution. They came to America to escape government intrusion into their lives, as well as taxation without representation. They were willing to die, and in some cases, lose everything they had for freedom. I wonder what they would think of the greatest county in the history of the world , as it is now? A giant nanny state. A far cry from the rugged individuals who did not need or want government to take care of them, because they depended and trusted in God and the sweat of their own brow.

In this country right now, estimates are 40% - 60% of Americans and illegal aliens are receiving some sort of government help. Once the country has nationalized health care, it will be 100% of the people. Don't be fooled, once the government gets their foot in the door, it will become a single-payer, nationalized health care system. And, remember, “he who writes the checks, get to make the rules”. I don't want Dick Durbin deciding whether I can have the treatment I might need. I want the freedom to make my own health care decisions.

It seems that everything is a crisis these days and there is no time to study the problem before we just write these huge, expensive laws and regulations to try and fix it. No time is allowed to try different solutions, do pilot programs in individual states, allowing time to study if it's effective and cost efficient. No, they have to pass it right now, or the whole country will implode. Just like the stimulus package passed last year. It had to get done right then or unemployment would rise above 8%, they didn't even have time to read the bill before they voted on it. If it was so important, why have they spent less than 10% of it, while unemployment reaches 9.8% at last count? This government wants to keep the people under their thumbs, so that they can gain power over us and therefore easily control us.

Communism and Tyranny are what's normal in the history of the world, it is freedom that is different. It is freedom that has enabled us to become the greatest country in history. If we remain on the track we are traveling, freedom will not continue. It cannot continue. And hundreds of thousands of soldiers will have died in vain, fighting to protect that God given, inalienable right to freedom and the pursuit of happiness.

I'm quite sure there are millions of small businesses who would love to hire more people, but
cannot, due to all of the taxes that go along with each employee. I read that one of the Health Care bills has a provision stating businesses would have to provide insurance for their employees, or pay big fines. Small businesses just cannot afford all of these fees and still make profit enough to stay afloat. Between federal, state, and local taxes, they already pay close to 50% to some form of government, so they can waste it on programs like “Cash for Clunkers”.

The government cannot solve all of our problems and we shouldn't trust them enough to let
them try. I think $3 Trillion is more than enough for Washington to do what they were put in power to do, yet they will spend $1.7 Trillion above that budget, hurling us into the largest deficit in American history. A bill our kids and grand kids will never be able to overcome. I think it's time, as a country, we turn back to trusting in God, not bureaucrats who care more about keeping their jobs than doing
what is right.

A law passed by the 84th Congress (P.L. 84-140) and approved by the President on July 30, 1956, the President approved a Joint Resolution of the 84th Congress, declaring IN GOD WE TRUST the national motto of the United States. IN GOD WE TRUST was first used on paper money in 1957, when it appeared on the one-dollar silver certificate. The first paper currency bearing the motto entered circulation on October 1, 1957. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) was converting to the dry intaglio printing process. During this conversion, it gradually included IN GOD WE TRUST in the back design of all classes and denominations of currency.

Below is a listing by denomination of the first production and delivery dates for currency bearing IN GOD WE TRUST:

$1 Federal Reserve Note February 12, 1964 March 11, 1964
$5 United States Note January 23, 1964 March 2, 1964
$5 Federal Reserve Note July 31, 1964 September 16, 1964
$10 Federal Reserve Note February 24, 1964 April 24, 1964
$20 Federal Reserve Note October 7, 1964 October 7, 1964
$50 Federal Reserve Note August 24, 1966 September 28, 1966
$100 Federal Reserve Note August 18, 1966 September 27, 1966

It showed up a few times in the mid 1800s, as well.

There once was a prediction of an imminent flood in Ohio. A warning was announced on the local radio and TV. The sheriff drove around to make sure everyone had evacuated the area. He came to one man’s house, found the owner still there, and told him to get into his jeep to avoid the coming flood. The man replied, “Don’t worry, the Lord will save me!”

Well, the floods came and the man had to go up to the second floor of his house. A rescue boat went by. “Get onboard, the flood is going to get even worse!” the rescue worker cried out.
But the man said, “Don’t worry, the Lord will save me!”

The flood did get worse! The man had to go up on his roof to avoid the rising water! A helicopter flew over his house. “Grab the rescue line,” they hollered to the man. “Don’t worry,” the man hollered back, “the Lord will save me!” The waters rose further, the man was washed away ... and he drowned!
Thankfully, the man wound up in heaven. But, when the man saw God, he strutted right up to God and said, “Why didn’t you save me? I waited for you!”

God replied, “I sent you a jeep, a boat, and a helicopter! What more did you want me to do?! All you had to do was get onboard!!”

I couldn't resist. I will point out on sentence in each of your paragraphs that illustrates the FAIL that I alluded to...

I'm sure that this "we" that you speak of still holds "in God we trust" deep in their heart- you conveniently misuse "we" in reference to ALL "people of the United States.

Not all of us. Some Americans arrived here chained to each other below the decks of ships- packed in tighter than a can of sardines.

In this country right now, estimates are 40% - 60% of Americans and illegal aliens are receiving some sort of government help. Once the country has nationalized health care, it will be 100% of the people. I'm pretty sure that you meant to say that 100% of Americans currently receive some sort of government help. Name me one American living completely unattached from Uncle Sam's Grid -(well, perhaps there are a few survivalists out there), correction... name me one American living in civilization and not tethered to the government. You can't.

It seems that everything is a crisis these days and there is no time to study the problem before we just write these huge, expensive laws and regulations to try and fix it. No time is allowed to try different solutions, do pilot programs in individual states, allowing time to study if it's effective and cost efficient. Who is this mysterious "government" boogie man that you speak of? He doesn't live on the hillside or in some cave. The government exists because of us. Inefficient government is our own fault- we keep electing incompetent representatives. And we will continue to do so until we stop falling for the bipartisan finger pointing okey doke.

Freedom has enabled us to become the greatest country in history, really?? I disagree. Wealth has enabled us to become the greatest country in history. And how did we become so wealthy? One of my favorite quotes- "no one is free when others are oppressed". To this day, there are a lot of oppressed Americans. That's a fact.

I'm quite sure there are millions of small businesses who would love to hire more people, but
cannot, due to all of the taxes that go along with each employee.
I read that one of the Health Care bills has a provision stating businesses would have to provide insurance for their employees, or pay big fines. Between federal, state, and local taxes, they already pay close to 50% to some form of government, so they can waste it on programs like “Cash for Clunkers”.

I'd argue that millions of small business cannot employ more people because they cannot compete, from a profit standpoint, with mega-corporations and foreign owned businesses that sell the same widget far cheaper than your mom and pop can ever dream to.

The government cannot solve all of our problems and we shouldn't trust them enough to let
them try. I think $3 Trillion is more than enough for Washington to do what they were put in power to do, yet they will spend $1.7 Trillion above that budget, hurling us into the largest deficit in American history. I think it's time, as a country, to stop wasting so much money in unnecessary wars, re-evaluate our position in the global world economy, adequately fund education so that we will have a competent workforce in the future, wean ourselves from our oil addiction, and, did I mention adequately fund education?

“In God We Trust”

And you may find this hard to believe, but yes, I trust and believe in God. We are nothing without him and his grace and mercy. That's what I believe.
I also believe that he gave us good sense and intelligence, but we refuse to use it- instead we wait on Him to do it for us when we can solve these problems ourselves.

OK, I concede the cross removal statement. I did not fact check that because it sounded just like a stunt the ACLU would pull. Here are some examples:

http://www.aclu.org/religion/schools/26063prs20060628.html

http://www.aclu.org/religion/public/16061prs20020813.html

http://www.aclu.org/religion/schools/16369prs20050210.html

http://www.aclu.org/religion/discrim/16319prs20010322.html

The list goes on and on.

I have a fundamental difference of opinion from you on small businesses and taxes. Every time this country cuts taxes, the economy improves. I believe the best way to get out of a recession, is for the government to cut taxes, not take more from people who work for it, to give it to people that don't. I'm all for helping people who cannot help themselves, but have a real problem with people that can work and choose not to.

I own a small business and compete very well with the big boys, because I provide superior service. I would love to hire some help, but it makes more sense for me to keep my business small enough to handle it myself, due to the unreasonable taxes and fees an employee would cost me. Government would literally punish me for taking someone off of the unemployment dole.

Saying that 100% of Americans get government help is a bit of a stretch but I will bite. Sure I use government roads, bridges, etc. But believe me, I pay my fair share for that right. I'm sure you know what I was talking about. LaChip, WIC, Wellfare, Food Stamps, the Louisiana Charity Hospital system, and programs like these. Like I said, I'm all for helping people that cannot help themselves, but do we really need to spend millions of dollars advertising these programs? The only reason we are teathered to government is because we as voters have allowed these clowns to infiltrate every aspect of our lives. If they can't tax it, they regulate it to death, then take it over.

Yes we do continue to elect these folks. And, these career politicians continue to give us the preverbial finger. I can only vote for who is on the ballet.

When I said "They came to America", I was referencing the original settlers, as you well know. My family heritage arrived in America much the same way as those you speak of. They came here, ripped from their families and their homes. They came packed in the bottom of ships, tighter than sardines. I've read Cajun history. But, I've never met one of my family members that this happened to. It's ancient history and does me no good to dwell on it. I'm too busy trying to make double what I need to live on, so all forms of government can rob half of it from me. Heck, I don't even get a thank you or a reach around.

As for the unnecessary wars you speak of, I agree. I don't want our country fighting in unncessary wars either. If the wars you speak of are Iraq and Afganistan, it is obviously a matter of opinion. Two different presidents from two oppisite sides seem to think they are necessary because we are still fighting them. I wonder if they really want to win either of these fronts.

You say that wealth made us the greatest country on earth. I agree with you. I belive that freedom allowed this wealth. Free market and capitalism allowed this wealth. You say people are still oppressed in this country. I promise, I'm not trying to be argumentative when I ask this, I'm just truly curious. Who is still oppressed in this country and who is oppressing them. I really don't understand this. This country gives all of it's people an unprecidented chance at a completely free education. It also gives it's people the freedom (at least for now) to pursue any career or business they choose. The only limits on what one can accomplish in this country are his own. (at least for now)

I hear this dependence on oil argument from so many people and I have to ask, what is so bad about petroleum? When did oil and petroleum products become such a demon in the minds of Americans. Now, I can understand having a problem with an addiction to forien oil, when they are discovering billions of barrels of oil right here in our own country. We also have a very high rate of unemployment. It seems to me that if we would start extracting the oil we have in our own country, it would solve a large part of unemployment, tax revenue, and problems with the Middle East.

Now, in my humbe opinion, the biggest reason companies move their factories out of this country is not completely due to cheap labor. I believe that extreme taxes and regulation are the biggest reasons those businesses left. It is the role of government to regulate pollution and dangerous work hazards, but it has been taken to the extreme. I believe that if government would get out of businesses way, we would still be the #1 industrialized nation on earth. I'm not saying we should become like China with the unchecked polution, but there has to be a happy medium somewhere, when unemployment rates are nearing 10%.

My biggest point in this opinion piece is that the government plays on the fears of it's people, to gain power over them. History has proved this out, time and time again. If as a people we would stop turning to government and turn to God or whatever higher power you might believe in, we as a people would be better off. This is done on both sides of the Isle and not just a Democrat or Republican ploy. I'm afraid it will be too late, real soon, to stop these guys. Most legitimate polls say that a BIG majority of the people of this country are against Cap & Trade, as well as Nationalized Health Care, yet our government proved today that they don't care what we think. They only care about taking control of more and more of our daily lives.

Obviously your not going to change my mind on what I believe is the role of the government, and I'm not going to change yours. So, I will end it with this.

How are we going to pay for all of this? How are our kids and grandkids going to pay for it?

P.S. Thanks for not stooping to name calling. It really aggrivates me when people cannot strengthen their argument, and start with the rediculous, stereotyped labels. Also, please forgive my spelling and grammer, as it is 1:50AM.

Oh, come on, don't let something as trivial as history get in your way. This is a Christian country, even if most of its founders were Deists, secularists, and rationalists and would never have dreamed of putting "In God We Trust" on their currency. *sarcasm off*

Actually, if they had adopted a similar motto, it probably would have been "In the People We Trust," and by "people," they would have meant landholding white males over the age of 21.

I figure after we killed his son he kind of washed his hands of us and called it quits.

We have a lot to answer for.

Reagan warned us that medicare would turn us into mindless zombies tethered to dorm beds and allowed only to leave to work.

He was wrong and you are wrong, but at least he was being paid to make bad arguments.
