With the success we have had with this limited season do we explore any trade options?

We have depth at DE, and DE is a position of need for many teams. Should we explore trade options?

A part of me thinks that we should not at all break up the chemistry this team currently enjoys, but the combination of our depth at DE and our Salary Cap restrictions makes a trade an interesting thought.

What about Merriman from the chargers, or trading for depth and much coveted draft picks. The saints are in a great position compared to the league in many areas concerning skilled players. We have a great team, but the bottom of the league this year is dead and for the right trade we could bring in that furious LB’er to play with Vilma or secure draft picks for a team that is up against the salary cap and has some high priced talent on defense.

I wonder if Loomis is working the phone right now? I guess we will find out at the close of week 6.

Is the depth at DE really that good? Grant, Smith, McCray and who else? Those are the only 3 that i am familiar with.

I'm sure they're keeping an open mind about options - it's part of the business.

But I'm just not that into Merriman.

No Merriman. I would add a nice role player but no star players to this team, just someone to help with depth down the line.

I don't really see the depth at DE that you speak of. We only have 4 on the roster. Those 4 are Will Smith, Charles Grant, Bobby McCray, and Jeff Charleston. With the defensive scheme that Gregg Williams runs, I don't see the need for a lights out LB. He likes to use Roman Harper and the nickel back, whether it be Randall Gay or Malcolm Jenkins, for blitzing.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that a great SLB or WLB wouldn't be great. But, the lack of certainly isn't hindering this team. And if it were, Shawne Merriman is NOT the answer. He's done absolutely nothing since coming back from his steroid suspension.

More along the lines of Salary Implications. Hargrove can play inside and out. McCray could start for many teams.

I'm not sure if G3 would let go of his pass rushers, but we have more depth in the form of 3 potential starters at DE that many teams covet.

Im fine with the scenario if we stand "pat," but the value is there right now.

Yeah i think alot of teams have 3 DE's on their team that they like, and if yall were looking to trade a DE i dont think it would be McCray who may very well be the best pass rusher amongst the 3.

I don't know much about Hargrove though so i don't kno what type of value he or McCray would bring in.

I recall that Loomis and Payton said after 2009 draft (w/so few picks) that they wanted to keep all the 2010 draft picks. Of course, if there's someone out there that gets them closer to the Super Bowl, they may take a shot. I don't really know who would even be available. I'd stay away from Merriman. You don't see many trades in the NFL anymore. The Braylon Edwards trade was very surprising, but I guess the Browns figure their season is done anyway.

Teams in the position that the Saints are in dont trade away players, unless it is an obvious upgrade or a MUST to make a Superbowl run.

The Saints are PRIMED for that run with the current roster. They will not be making any trades unless some kind of injury happens to a player that leaves a big hole. Those players would be Brees, Vilma, Sharper, and maybe Sedrick Ellis, but not likely Ellis.

It also makes no sense to trade players who are playing well, ie Grant and Smith(finally) for a player who has been invisible and coming off a major injury in Merriman.

With the current depth at each position that we have... how many of our 7 draft picks will realistically have a shot at making the team?

You figure the 1st and 2nd rounder will make the 53-man squad, and maybe the 3rd rounder will probly get a spot on the roster too barring injury (see Chip and Arnoux).

So that leaves 4 draft picks (assuming we use them all) that will be probably auditioning for another team during their preseason in New Orleans.

The staff does an excellent job of weeding out potential "problem children", so I don't think "chemistry" will be an issue with ANY player thats brought here... whether its via trade, draft, or free agency... our club does a great job choosing character guys.

So with that said... I think we should trade for a DT before next week's deadline. We don't know how healthy Clancey will be on that knee, and Ayodele is the only other NT on our entire roster unless they slide Sed over and start Hargrove at the 3-tech... which will leave us thin at 3-tech.

We will eventually need help at the nose anyway with Clancey's age and recent injury... so... go get Dorsey... yeah I said it... give KC a conditional 3th that could turn into a 2nd. GD can play the nose... yeah he was a 3-tech but he's also played some NT, and he can do that here too.

Bring home Glenn Dorsey!

Don't think Dorsey is the answer. I'd rather go for an established veteran who has a proven track record. I don't have a clue who might even be available. The Chiefs are probably willing to dump Dorsey since it was the prior regime who drafted him. However, he's done really nothing in almost a season and a half. Even a 3rd might be reach. Let the buyer beware.
