Was this the play call or did Brees see something to audible into the sneak? Seems a bit far for a sneak although it looked like a modified QB draw as Brees took a mini step back (maybe to get low or maybe to draw the interior d-lineman in) before following the center. Just interested if the credit goes more to the coach or QB here...

I think it was a call but I'm not sure. But I figured it was a QB draw and when he saw the push he didn't hesitate.

he said it was a planned play -- he told the line to get down real low and he would go over the top --

Not the play being talked about. It was the one from two yards out. What I recall from Payton's presser was that it was a called play, not a sneak, it was a QB Draw and if you watch it, the defense was totally not expecting it as the DTs split and one of them even ran past Drew not realizing he still had the ball and Drew just followed Goodwin in.

That's the one before the end of the first half. I believe they're talking about the second one, that was from a bit more out.

yeah is was called. Coach covered this in his press conference. In fact if you go back and look Coach even whispered something in the line judges ear. I am guessing it was hey look for the ball to break the plane.

ah nevermind...thought you were talking about the first one.

i wondered this too when i saw the replay - to me it seems goodwin was not expecting brees to be following him

It was a designed play. If you watch the replay, both guards pull away from the center. The 2 def. tackles followed their keys (if the guard pulls, that is the direction of the play). By doing that, it opens up a huge hole for Brees to follow in behind the center. Beautiful play design by Payton.

I think that Brees noticed the gap and just took the snap and went forward, I've seen that happen in another football game.

Cool, thanks. That was my impression too. I thought maybe it was a designed QB draw that Drew just noticed right after the snap that it was already open and aborted the drop back to just punch it in. I think it was a nice play call if so and very unusual given that it looked definitely like a run formation.

You guys didn't notice Brees spreading the defense by sending the receivers out off of the line? The Dolphins were expecting a pass.
