King Cakes (1 Viewer)

Cake Palace in BR makes some killer cakes and ships them.

its still a donut. if I put sprinkles and icing on a pile of poop its still a pile of poop!
So its the glaze that makes the donut?

Are you saying you dont like donuts?

I'm learning all kinds of new useless info. Thx EE!

I believe it is a take from it. The old McKenzie's cake were made from brioche and denser than the galette de rois. Additionally it had colored sugar sprinkled around the cake with cherries on each end. The cake was not nearly as sweet as today's king cakes and focused primarily on the dough used to make it.

This picture is of a McKenzie's cake. Unfortunately this cake is ruined because they left it in the bag too long and the yeast and sugar have started to interact and sweat, ruining the cake.

Yeah, I remember the McKenzie cakes. Seems like that's all we ever got when I was a kid. Then we started getting them from Gambino's.

I always hated the cherry pieces, but they had the baby about 75% of the time.

you are correct, sir! I really miss the McKenzie's cakes. I got one from Tastee's last year and it was an abomination! I almost went Ignatius J Rielly on them.

Messed up your pyloric valve, huh?

McKenzie was the only kind i liked too. Until i can master homemade brioche (i continue to fight the good fight in this regard), i satisfy my brioche cravings at Croissant D'Or.

Gambino's was ok -- but much, much sweeter. i don't like king cake that sweet. and i don't care for any kind of filled king cakes.

since they moved to Raliegh, my dad just makes his own...

the Zulu cake from Randazzo's is nothing like a traditional cake, but it's good as hell!

the true definition of a king cake is the dough used to make it. Now a days you will be hard pressed to find a king cake. McKenzie's (now Tastees) makes a traditional cake but its not nearly as good as it used to be. A real king cake is a french concoction made of Brioche. Today's cakes are nothing like the real deal and to be honest, while they are tasty, not nearly as good.

If you EVER find an old fashioned cake, brioche, sprinkles with no white icing, PLEASE let me know. I still like those better than what we can get today. We just had our first Gambinos cake at the office; tasty, but not the same. I've been in deep king cake depression for over a decade.

the Tastee's on W Esplanade and Transcontinental has them. You just have to ask for a McKenzie's cake. They are not as good as they once were, but they are a facsimile there of...

Not sure about the delivery cost, but this is by far the best king cake.

Edit: Rouses makes a good king cake, but for that price you might as well get one from the Pecan House or the Swiss Confectionery on St. Charles. Both worth the price.

They have two kinds, do you recommend one over the other?

OK, question. Let's say I want to try my hand at baking a King Cake. My friends get together every Wednesday night for dinner. So should I do it the Wednesday before Mardi Gras? I mean, the Wednesday after is Ash Wednesday. I suppose King Cake might be not OK on Ash Wednesday?

Not OK on Ash Wednesday. King Cakes are permissible during the entire Carnival season which runs from Twelfth night (Jan 6) to Mardi Gras day (Feb 16th, this year).
