Democrats Take Control of the Senate

By LIZ SIDOTI and BOB LEWIS
Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats wrested control of the Senate from Republicans Wednesday with an upset victory in Virginia, giving the party complete domination of Capitol Hill for the first time since 1994.
Jim Webb's squeaker win over incumbent Sen. George Allen gave Democrats their 51st seat in the Senate, an astonishing turnabout at the hands of voters unhappy with Republican scandal and unabated violence in Iraq. Allen was the sixth Republican incumbent senator defeated in Tuesday's elections.

i suppose you are talking about the legal battle over who really won the election :)

Allen is FARRRR too arrogant to just go away. We are all in for more football references and cowboy regalia, as he drags this thing through the courts until the next election.

Elections do good things, like eliminating Allen, Frist, and Kerry from 2008 contention. The major impact will be on judicial appointees, where the social conservatives will be rejected out of hand. Say hello to GRIDLOCK, a valuable gift from the Founders.

Oh one was just the same as the other to me, in that Virginia election. i just wish they would have had their election over there a little more quietly. Every week it was some new stupid "scandal" or "revelation" which i had to hear instead of news stories which might have genuinely interested me. Coupla rich guys with talking points. Yawn.

i agree that the implications will be heaviest in the judicial-appointee arena. Too bad there is still a lot of work left to do in other arenas, such as education, health care, retirement funds, and not like we could forget campaign-finance reform, which IMO drives everything else that goes on up there. the real capitol building is K Street.

Troy your avatar is great :)

so are Allen's (potential) Presidential chances ruined?

Macaca and aftermath killed his presidential hopes.

so who would be the front runner for the Reps 08 nominee?

George isn't running for president any time soon. Even with the changing demographics in Virginia, he lost a campaign he should have won to a candidate who had never before run for public office by running a miserable campaign.

I have been talking about Jim Webb on this forum for nine months. (And incidentally his wife grew up in the Vietnamese community in New Orleans East.) I am a huge fan of Webb and actually made a small contribution to his campaign. I think the guy is going to make a very interesting US Senator, but Webb's forte is not his campaign skills. Allen ran a terrible campaign, and the last-minute attack on Webb's novels was just stupid and backfired.

The biggest consequence of the Democrats taking control of the Senate will be Leahy heading the Senate Judiciary committee, seemingly the most ideological of all Senate committees. If Stevens steps down, there will be a battle over Senate confirmation. But the Democrats need to be careful. They don't need to remind the country with a presidential campaign 12 months away of all the reasons so many went Republican 12 years ago.

i'm going to go out on a limb here, and say it's going to be a wealthy Christian person with a bevy of handlers, a long history of public service, not a lot of actual real-life experience, and nearly nothing substantial to say.

Someone who hasn't had to personally do the laundry, take the car to the dealership, or make a grocery trip in over 20 years. Somebody who's never seen the inside of the DMV, a public clinic or school, a police station, or an unemployment office.

Somebody whose intern's shoes cost more than the personal vehicle of the hired driver.

Wait. Maybe that was the Dems nominee. Ah, details.

LOL. I've watched GOP pundit after GOP pundit say Allen should "do the right thing" and just go ahead and concede.

Nobody is in the mood for recounts, "stolen" elections or any more about this election. It's over.

Will Allen do the noble thing? I doubt it.

Allen's presidential aspirations are over, but not his political aspirations. Does Warner's seat come up in 2008? If so and Warner is not running, Allen may give it another shot. For that reason, I don't think Allen is going to do anything outrageous as far as dragging out the election results.

Base on yesterday's results, 2008 would be a battle between centrists. Not a compelling voice among them. Discussing this topic is to veer into dangerous ChrisMatthewsLand, where Hillary dreams occupy pundits' minds everywhere. There are no more movement candidates. We all now work hard and play well with others.
