Here's the scenario: A team from a small-market city that wears black and gold suffers 40 seasons of futility, with only 7 winning years to break up the carnage... They get a new head coach and draft a highly-touted running back, turn the corner and win four Super Bowls.........By now you've probably realized that the team is the Pittsburgh Steelers and they were very much like our Saints until 1972, when they started drafting incredibly well and got a little luck on their side.

I could see that scenario, El Lay. I just dont know if their is another Immaculate Reception waiting for us in the playoffs, man. Thats the play that made the Steelers good and on the map, pure luck and a guy that was in the right place at the right time. I dont know if that ever will happen agian in my lifetime or ever agian. If they had instant replay back then, it would have been reversed mark my words.

That's a stretch. I'd be happy to just become a playofff team. The Steelers were almost a dynasty back then. The Steeler's defense was much of the foundation for their greatness, and I don't see that here.

..Thanks, man... I just thought it was appropriate since we're playing them this week. For some reason, I'm not able to use the search feature on the old site- though I did try. :ezbill:

Yeah, you have to use the little box in the bottom right. The normal search page doesn't come up for some reason.

Why would they reverse a legally caught ball?

Why would they reverse a legally caught ball?

The critical question was: Off of whom did the ball bounce in that Fuqua/Tatum collision? If it bounced off Fuqua, and then Harris was the next to touch the ball, the reception was illegal since two offensive players could not touch a pass in succession; the Raiders would gain possession (on fourth down) and a sure win. If the ball bounced off Tatum, or if it bounced off Fuqua and then Tatum, the reception was legal, as a defensive player was the last to touch the ball.

The game officials did not immediately make any signal, and there was no instant replay rule at the time. Referee Fred Swearingen telephoned the NFL's supervisor of officials, Art McNally, who was sitting in the press box, after which he signaled a touchdown. This was the first known use of television replay to comfirm a call [1]. Fans immediately rushed the field, and it took fifteen minutes to clear them so that the point-after, or conversion, could be kicked to give the Steelers what turned out to be their final margin of victory, 13-7.

Yeah, that is in the article, but you forgot to put this part on here too.

An article on the physics of the Immaculate Reception appeared in the science section of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on October 18, 2004. The article describes the work of John Fetkovich, an emeritus professor of physics at Carnegie Mellon University. Fetkovitch's analysis of the NFL Films tape of the play led him to the conclusion, based the trajectory of the bounced ball and conservation of momentum, that the ball must have bounced off of Tatum, who was running upfield at the time, rather than Fuqua, who was running across and down the field.

An addendum to the article stated that NBC's video of the play, broadcast during the telecast of the 1997 AFC Championship game, clearly showed that the ball had hit Tatum.

So again, why would they reverse a legally caught ball?
