My S.O. and I did something really stupid and booked a NON-REFUNDABLE hotel room for tomorrow which is located across from the Convention Center. I don't live in NOLA and actually had NO idea that this weekend is Bayou Classic weekend. I had to google it to find out what it was. We just wanted a get-a-way for the weekend type trip lol- fun, relaxing, cool. I have never been down there during this time and need to know what the hell to expect. :idunno:

Is parking going to be a nightmare? The hotel has limited parking and said there's a big garage across the street. Will traffic coming up I-10 west be gridlocked? Check-in at the hotel is at 3pm and we live a few hours away. What time would you leave if you were us?? We would like to get there a little early to cat around and kill time.

Honestly, it's probably a terrible time for a relaxing weekend in downtown or the quarter. There's going to be a lot of people downtown and a lot of cars just riding around, looking awesome with loud music. A lot of the nicer restaurants shut down for the weekend altogether.

You can give it a shot, but if I were you, I'd spend time in other parts of the city. I'd spend some time uptown, perhaps. Go to the zoo. Take a street car and get some good food. Maybe go to the art museum and have a picnic on Bayou St John weather permitting.

Yeah- I was thinking of just taking the streetcar uptown for the day and spending my time there instead. I thought about Frenchmen, but the garage has no in/out privileges and I don't want to spend time frustrated in traffic any more than I have to.

I did hear that some businesses in the FQ close altogether during BC weekend. Is it really that rowdy? I've never even heard of them closing anything for Mardi Gras.

The problem isn't the number of people by itself. Restaurants struggle with staffing since no one wants to work that weekend. The majority of BC visitors don't tip well. And there's lots of complaints regarding shady practices like eating half your food and sending it back. So a lot of restaurants simply shut down and give the staff a break before Christmas.

Thanks for the replies. I may also go over to the Museum of Art and Fairgrounds for the day. Hmmmm- it should be interesting regardless.
