Al Woods starting for Tampa? (1 Viewer)

Their other rookie starting DT Brian Price is on IR. He must be better than the other guys at the position besides McCoy

Yeah, I wish we could have snuck him onto the Practice Squad

I think the Saints were so unimpressed by him that they did not even try to put him on the practice squad.

Pittsburgh was the 1st team to sign him, then Pittsburgh cut him. That would have been the perfect chance for the Saints to put him on the PS but they opted not to do so.

Now he goes to Tampa and is now starting.

Trade up in the draft to get him, then your division rival gets him for nothing and starting in his rookie season.

Great!

Not the first time it's happened. Antonio Pittman played some for St. Louis, even looked good a few times, before disappearing. David Jones started some for Cinncinati before being bumped by their excellent other young CBs.

What's important isn't so much that you look brilliant for your draft day maneuvering, but that you continue to steadily aquire young, well priced talent at value. Obviously we won't reap any benefits for Al Woods at this point, but then Chris Ivory and Junior Galette were guys we normally** wouldn't expect to have gotten from UDFA, and we did.

Put it like this, if we had drafted Chris Ivory in the 4th round and signed Al Woods as an UDFA, would you be unhappy? Obviously not. So what does it matter that the situation was the inverse?

**By "normally" I mean under most other front offices/coaching staffs. This particular FO/Coaching Staff combination routinely makes UDFA finds, at a higher rate then any other team in the NFL outside of maybe Indianapolis. We treat UDFA's as integral to the off-season process as the draft itself, and have routinely reaped the benefits from that.

I don't know that the Saints didn't try to sign Woods to the PS, but that wouldn't change the present circumstances with Woods. Teams are free to sign any player off any practice squad to their roster, so him being on the Saints PS wouldn't prevent him from playing for the Bucs. IIRC, the Steelers signed him right after the rosters were trimmed to 53. Reggie Jones was waived on the same day as Woods.

IMO, it says a lot about the Saints scouting department that a team has a guy that couldn't make the active roster in their starting rotation.

:plus-un2: Good points, as usual.

Yeah, but you can't look at it like that (at least I can't). Chris Ivory is a special find that acts like a bonus for us. We could have gotten a solid player in the 4th (probably a good special teams guy and maybe future starter). If you play it your way, then Ivory is not a bonus anymore (4th round pick) and Woods is a lost cause. However, if you play it my way, we could have a solid 4th round draft prospect (not Woods) in addition to a more than pleasent surprise in Ivory.

According to the participation log, Woods was not starting today. It was Gerald McCoy and Roy Miller at defensive tackle against the Ravens, and Woods was a substitute.

I got to watch the game, and I only saw Woods in there very sparingly. Not sure why anyone thought he was the starter.

I'm glad to see that he has a job, just wasn't good enough to make the Saints team when they had a big need for a DT. I'm sure the only regrets the Saints have is trading up to pick him. " One man's garbage is another man's gold ".

Good for Tampa Bay and Al Woods. We were all pulling for him, and I think we all saw and loved the video of him getting the draft call from the Saints. That said, he couldn't make the team, did nothing in the preseason and now he's getting a chance with a team that can't stop anybody except the 49ers. I know he got abused in training camp by our O-Line and I know he'll get abused again when we face the Bucs (if he sticks that long).
