ever been a wildcard or not received a first round bye? That could potentially happen to us this year. If we win out and Atlanta wins all but against us we would be tied with the best record in the NFC, yet we would be a wildcard. Im not predicting this, but man, that would be messed up.

Yes it would. The Failcon fans will crap themselves worse than Matt Ryan when it happens to them later.

Twice in a year. That might cause a rule change.

They should extend the seeds to 8 and base them by record. Division winners would still have a chance to make the playoffs and you give a few more teams with winning records a chance to make the playoffs as well instead of being unfairly left out.

The reason for the divisons is marketing
At the end of the year 8 teams will hang a banner in their stadium
That helps sell tickets.
It may not be fair but it''s good business.

I'd hate to see that. They may as well get rid of the divisions then. I think division winners should always get in.

We can tie Atlanta for the best record in the NFC and if we don't have a better NFC South record, we will have the 5th seed. Even if all the division winners are 7-9 and we are 13-3.

Of the 4 division winners, the best record gets top seed. Of the remaining 4 division winners, the next best gest the second seed.

There is no way to get homefield advantage (1st round bye) without winning your division.

If Atlanta and New Orleans have the same record, the first tie breaker is the division record (against NFC South opponents). The next tie breaker is common opponents. Since both we and Atlanta face nothing but common opponents for the remainder of the seasons, we can never win this tie breaker, which makes all the following ones null and void.

So the ONLY way we can win the division is to either have a better record than the Falcons, or for the Falcons to have an extra NFC South loss if we have the same record. Either way, Atlanta HAS to lose at least 2 games over the next 5.

I think the OP knows all this. Just stating it would be all out crappy to be 13-3 and still a 5 seed and whether if this has ever happened before. I can't ever recall that it has. EVER!

That can be debatable judging by how the entire NFC West have played this season against the best teams in the conference, but they all will probably be improved next season..hopefully.

The least the league can do is to have two more seeds or seed the original 6 team playoff system differently by teams having the best record.

There has been discussion. Two issues. First is one that will NEVER change-- all 4 division winners will get into the playoffs. Period. That is the immovable object that the competition commitee and all involved pretty much agree on.

The other issue is how the seeding occurs. You might get a healthy discussion of taking the 4 division winners and two wild cards and simply seeding them by Overall record. But I doubt it will change, because the biggest perk of winning your division is getting to host your first playoff game.

1999 Jaguars 14-2, Titans 13-3 (same division), Colts 13-3 with worse AFC record get bye.

2000 Titans 13-3, Ravens 12-4 (same division), Raiders 12-4 with worse AFC record get bye.

1997-- Kansas City 13-3, Denver 12-4 (same division), Jaguars 11-5 get bye.

1993-- Dallas 12-4, Giants 11-5 (same division), 49'ers 10-6 get bye.

I could keep going back, but it all happened before the league was re-alligned. Since the realignment (which probably occured to prevent this kind of thing, promote parity, and give the schedule balance and predictability), it has not happened.

I think it sucks that the winners of the NFC West are given seeding precedence over the wild card teams. They need to change playoff seeding to go by record. Division winners still get it, but not insured top seeding.
