Of any OLB in the NFL.

Shanle has racked up the worst Stop Rate against the pass (19 percent) of any outside linebacker. Pass plays in his general direction have averaged 9.6 yards -- we're no math professors, but when you're almost giving up a first down per play, that's not good.

I knew the guy was bad vs the pass, but not this bad. What do the Shanle defenders think about this? If getting a replacement for him isn't one of the top priorities in the offseason, I'd be shocked.

I think this thread will be a train wreck of people making all kinds of idiotic claims that are based on some idiotic football knowledge.

Shanle has been targeted a lot by virtue of a couple of things. First, it's the most vulnerable part of the Saints defense. Our run defense has been great, and throwing down field is just a waste of time. We've been shutting out receivers week after week. So the key to beating the Saints is the short passing game--the tight ends and the running backs.

Danny Clark has been beaten a lot as well--and Clark and Shanle are going to be your natural targets in that situation. On the other hand, I can think of a couple of plays even last week where there was a 3rd and long, and a pass thrown underneath was stopped short of the 1st down by Shanle. In that case--mission accomplished.

Our defense is good. So there's always going to be a "weakest spot" on any defense, even the 85 Bears. And that will be the focus of opposing offenses.

Throwing short passes and dump offs to the backside is where to attack the Saints.

I know there are some well respected posters who are pretty convincing in defending Shanle, but I personally think he's the weakest link on our defense.

I certainly hope a couple new OLB's are in our 2011 plans.

I stick to my guns and the same story as I have told for the past 3 years :

2007 - Shanle recovers a fumble and has an open field in front of him - not a touchdown open field, but a pretty wide open half/field. He picks it up and starts heading down the sidelines. Shanle makes it about 16 yards before he is caught from behind, an offensive player was running behind him on the sideline, blocking for the RB before the fumble.

I'll never forget jumping up and down, high fiving the Asian guy as I always did when we did something good in the Dome -such as recovering a fumble, then looking at my cousin...........he had a look of horror on his face.

I asked, why so serious cousin? He replied - "Shanle just got caught from behind by that guard...."

Could momentum, or slight angles, or the food he ate the night before had something to do with it? Sure, but from that moment on, Shanle was slow, like offensive lineman slow, and the above stat is no surprise.

Shanle is a veteran, no doubt, however it shows out there because unless he is coming down on a play or helping in on a pile, he is usually getting beat by someone. I still remember Dallas Clark just toying with him in the Super Bowl, however he is smart, knows the game of football well and knows how to read plays, but I do agree a replacement needs to come along and soon.

i dont know about defending shanle......but i would bet that he sees the most playing time out of all our LBs

we have dunbar and clark to rotate with each other......vilma and mitchell see a fair share of swapping........shanle doesnt really have a backup to keep him fresh

This debate has been done before.

As CantonLegend pointed out, Shanle see a lot of playing time. He does a lot of things well, and he's part of the reason our defense is so solid.

And no, he's not "usually getting beat by someone"...are you talking about in pass coverage?

And Shanle wasn't solely responsible for Dallas Clark. And that would be a mismatch anyway. So that's kind of a silly issue to raise.

Shanle suffers because he doesn't make spectacular highlight-reel tackles. But he's disciplined and fills his gaps well. Even if he's not making the tackle, he's forcing the play to someone else.

We could use a more athletic guy out there, to be sure. But IMO we could use a better pass rusher, no matter what position he plays. That's a much bigger issue than Shanle's play at linebacker.

Who is Doug Farrar and what is a Stop Rate?

(Actually I don't really care about the first part)

i mentioned he was slow in coverage yesterday in the other Shanle thread but i didnt know he was this bad.. the only reason he starts is because his veteran knowledge keeps him in the right general area (without that that 9.6 average probably skyrockets to a good 15+ and he's out of a job).. you will never see Shanle "blow" a coverage but he is easily the most untalented starting LB in the game right now

Contrary to popular belief (on this board) Shanle is NOT in fact "slow in coverage". If you focus on Shanle's play alone over the course of any game you will notice one thing: he is in coverage a LOT. He matches up against some of the best TEs in the game. It's no wonder he gives up some pass plays. What isn't mentioned in that article are the plays he doesn't give up. Seriously, don't pay attention to this stat, as it means NOTHING out of context (how many times he drops into coverage, how many passes go his way, etc.). The dude is one of the most consistent players on the defense. He's a great tackler, and he is without a doubt really good in coverage. Do you really think GW would have this dude on the field if he were as bad as the stats lead one to believe?

How does TCU Dan defend this or does he bothers too? I got put on BLAST by him after the Atlanta game because I made basically the same statements but this article states it better than I would have articulated it. I pointed out he was garbage lined up against any TE but was criticized because Indy, Minn, San Fran, Atl had great TE's.

I would love to hear from you about this SIR!

gregg williams said shanle is one of the most underrated linebackers in the league and also shanle was our defensive mvp as voted by the team

That speaks volumes.

He does get picked on a lot because he usually the one covering the TE and opponents throw to their TE a lot because of our downfield coverage. Combine that with the caliber of TEs he's faced and of course you'll have some bad lookign stats.

Then again, stats can be shown to prove anything. I think he can be upgraded, but if GW and the rest of the D voted him MVP, then there's got to be something he's doing right.

You're judging him based on a random stat compiled by bloggers? One taken out of context? Look at how many balls were thrown to the running backs and tight ends last week. It's actually a sign of our defensive strength against the pass. And our lack of pass rush doesn't help--a running back or tight end is going to shake free if you give him enough time.

Ridiculous.

Watch the games and stop reading the blogs. That article is citing some stat that is essentially meaningless, as was already addressed by another poster above.

And by the way Baller, use the search feature. TCU Dan wrote about Shanle at length, and yes, defended him in great detail.

Or alternatively, watch more football.
