All during the Cowboys comeback I kept saying, “Saints will win this. Super Bowl Champions don’t lose games like this.” I was mocked. Listen, I understand as Saints fans we have 40+ years of failure, heartache and disappointment. I also have seen champions like the great 49ers teams steal wins which the Saints seemed to have locked up. I don’t know about you but I’ve waited my whole life to root for a champion who crushes other teams’ dreams with skill, great quarterbacking, and a little luck. Until Drew Brees shows me consistently he isn’t elite and capable of late game heroics when I watch the Saints I’m going to believe. I might ***** and complain before and after but during the game I believe. Besides it’s 1000 times more fun watching the Saints blow a 17 point lead and expect the best and not the worst.

My brother-in-law was so convinced the Saints had blown it, he didn't even cheer when Lance caught the go-ahead touchdown. He was so convinced we had scored too early & we'd find a way to lose that he was unable to take an ounce of joy in what should've been an awesome moment.

Clearly, some Saints fan need to let go of the past... how many more times do you need to be shown that this is NOT the Saints "of old"?? We need to enjoy today's saints while we can - who knows how long it'll last.

Tampa Bay (+2) vs. Atlanta: I’m in denial about the Falcons. I don’t want to believe they are a 13 win team. When the Bucs are down 17-3 in the 2nd quarter Sunday I’ll be kicking myself. My hate of Atlanta overrides my good judgment much like my childhood love of McKenzie’s buttermilk drops.

Outstanding article. He has an excellent point.
Heck, as beloved as he is to us, there were plenty of empty seats during Archie's years because the team was so bad. I can't imagine how bad the Saints would be if they'd drafted Leinart or VY. No doubt, Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis wouldn't look near the geniuses they are with either of those head cases as the Saints' QB over the last 4 years. And with fans aggravated over bad play from the team, Tom Benson might never have come out of his Katrina-induced temporary insanity and pulled out of New Orleans in his negativity and paranoia.

Heaven intervened and gave us Brees, I'm convinced.

Here's my Thanksgiving game day story this year.
Every other year I have Thanksgiving on the MS coast with my mom and dad, and my sisters' family etc. My cousin, brother in law, and close friend always head to my cousin's deer camp in Jackson, AL right after Thanksgiving lunch. Since the Saints were on TV this year we decided to watch the first half of the game with our parents/families. We left at half time knowing that we'd be able to hear Hokie and Jim on the way to the camp. The reception goes out about at the Alabama line. As the Cowboys were coming back, I was being hated on by the guys with me. They all gave me the business about the Saints possibly losing, chocking, and blowing the game. As my cousin pulls up the play by play on his phone, he starts ripping me again about the Saints blowing the lead, then says we are DONE when Dallas get's inside our territory in the end of the 4th quarter. I sit calmly through all of this and proclaim, we are going to win, "C'mon defense make a play. Porter or Greer c'mon make a play!" We are going to win. Then cuz looks at me and says, "Saints first down at their own 11 yard line." I'm like I told you so, we recovered a fumble or got an interception!! We had no idea how we got the ball, just that we got it back. Then cuz says, "Ya'll got 89 yards to go to get a TD." I ask how much time is left, and he says 3:03 . I then say, "Do you all NOT know who our quarterback is?" It's Drew (*&^ing Brees! Did you miss the Super bowl? I then tell them I would bet them 20 bucks each that we score a TD in under 2 minutes. I got no takers. We scored in under two minutes, and you know the rest. As soon as the game was over, you KNOW, I spit on them every ounce of black and gold venom that I have built up for the past 44 years!
I suspended their Who Dat Membership for two weeks! I have ALWAYS believed as a Saints fan, but I KNOW now that if we have a healthy Drew Brees behind the center we can beat any team at any time!
obtw, I bought an extra 2 season tickets when we signed Drew and Reggie in 2006. ( I had a feeling we were gonna be pretty good.... LOL)

I had an instant of the same thought that we'd reverted for a second to the old Saints who could - not would, but could - blow that last second lead.

And, then I woke up.

I don't know exactly when it happened, but it happened to me. I'm 42 and been a Saints fan my whole life. I've seen almost every Saints game EVER. I've been to hundreds. I always thought we could lose at any point with any lead, but somehow that all changed. I realized it last year during the Dolphins game when we were getting killed. I hadn't thrown a remote control against the wall. I wasn't even concerned. My wife was freaking out and asking "are they tired" and "did they forget to practice", but I never wavered.

I told her in no uncertain terms that we were going to win. And, we did. I don't know when it happened, but it did and just like the OP, I don't think there's a game we can't win until the whistle blows.

except that horrid display against Cleveland earlier this year. That stunk.

Sometimes I wonder if that's what has happened to a lot of people on this very site. They're so used to the team collapsing with crushing losses that should've been wins, they just aren't capable of enjoying wins and as a result, don't post a thing.

But once things go south and we lose, they're back in familiar territory so they get chatty again.

I forgot just about everything from psychology classes I took nearly five years ago, but me thinks that's some form of operant conditioning. Or maybe classical...I don't know.

I've got a bet with my brother-in-law's dad "Pops." Before the Vikings game, he said he was ready to watch the Saints of old show their true colors. He said there was no way we would make the playoffs this season because we would choke. Last year was a fluke. (Supposedly, he used to be a Saints fan back in the day. He has an Early jersey that he likes to war to give the Saints bad Mojo). Of course, I was adamant that the Saints would indeed make the playoffs so I bet 5 bucks. (Thats a lot of money for me, right now.) I watched a few games with him, including the Steelers game. I could tell that he wanted to cheer the Saints on, but when something didn't go our way, he was quck to point it out. "See, same ole saints. They're gonna screw it up!" Well, after the Cowboys game, he commented "I guess I'll be the one collecting cans so I can pay you." It isn't over yet, but I think he's finally turning that corner and seeing that these Saints aren't the same ole Saints. This team knows how to win, even when having to push through some adversity.

The thing is, you never know how a player will perform with a different team,coaches,and schemes. Leinart and VY may have flourished under Payton's tutelage. Maybe. Will never know.

Speaking of Thanksgiving stories, the Saints saved my wife's step-father's life that day. He kept crying and moaning about how the Saints were gonna lose (even before halftime). As the Cowgirls were coming back in the second half I finally got aggravated with him and his drunk self and told him if the Saints lost I was gonna stab him with this pair of scissors that was on the table in front of me(of course I was only joking, well, maybe not). As Williams was streaking down the field I turned away in disgust (and to begin contemplating my alibi ) only to hear people screaming "he took the ball !!!". I turned around in disbelief to see the replay of Jenkins' awesome play, to which I told the step father in law "he just saved your life." Then after he game this drunk fool started talking about how LSU could beat the Saints, blah blah blah blah blah. I was very happy to call him on Saturday evening and get his take on the LSU game that day.

Nothing gets under my skin like some ill-informed fool blasting off at the mouth about how a college team can beat a pro team. 53 nfl players > than 10 ( maybe ) future nfl players any day of the week.

I hate LSU fans who run their mouths with that stupidity and I am an LSU graduate.

Yeah, if you can't watch even a major college football game side by side with even a pillow fight between two 2-9 NFL teams and note the dramatic difference in the quality of play, you just aren't really appreciating pro football.

Brees will never take credit for it, but that writer is right... without Brees the Saints probably aren't as successful as they are now... and certainly not Super Bowl Champions, looking to build a dynasty.

Maybe if we got Leinart he would have been decent but I don't think he has the pocket presence or the willingness to go down field to be successful in Payton's Offense. In Arizona he had situations where had time but he went with the 2-3 yard check down type throws far to often because he didn't trust his ability to throw it down field.
