Places to watch in Hollywood, FL (1 Viewer)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll take saintsfanfl recommendation and plan on going to SnD. I'll be getting in a little late on Saturday night then Sunday morning setup for the conference then off to the game. Little adjustment for me as the game will be at 1 pm instead of 10 am.

PM me before you come in if you can. Like I mentioned in my 1st post, I will be there in week 3 hosting an alumni watch party for the chapter I run, so there is a very good chance I go down there for the Skins game to go over final planning with the owner and drop off a deposit for our food and drink that he is providing for our event.

Yeah, if you have a vehicle, it's worth the drive to the Shuck. I've watched games at a few other locations in the area, and nothing else compares. Our game is on audio, it's pretty loud, it's a big group, we're loud, so it's as close to going to the game as you can without being there. The owner likes to do some silly and fun stuff (plays music or videos during commercials often).

Pretty much all the seats will be taken by someone by Noon or slightly earlier. There will be some non-fans there just eating brunch, so you just have to wait and watch like a hawk and swoop in when they leave (just don't rush anyone). If you show up after 12:30, don't expect a seat inside. But you can stand, but you'll probably want to eat, so that's a no go.

I'm usually there with my girlfriend every game, unless it's on national TV (even then I still sometimes come). I'm usually wearing my black reebok Colston jersey. I can be loud (you'll see).

I like the food, but I haven't eaten everything. I stick mostly to the poboys and other sandwich like items. I just learned that if you're not in New Orleans and at a place that is really good at a few items, just stick with stuff on bread and you're usually happy. I think their shrimp po boy is good, but not great, I really like their sausage po boy, and the dirty bird blackened chicken sandwhich is probably the best bang for your buck. Something about eating the enemy makes me smile.

I think they have a decent cup of gumbo too.

Also, Abita beer is on tap and they have most of the varieties on bottle too. No liquor though.

If you're a coffee guy, there is a place called Brew across the street that is my favorite place to get coffee.

While you're in Hollywood, if you're closer to US1, other bars to check out in general are Whiskey Tango and Mickey Byrnes. They're both good bars. If you're looking for something more "clubby" you can check out SAS martini lounge or Spice (Brazilian girls dancing.. nice.. if cheesy).

Otherwise, out west you have the Hard Rock which has a ton of bars, clubs and restaurants in a village style setting.

If you're going to check out the beach, Hollywood beach has a decent board walk. Nick's is a decent bar with food. I haven't eaten at enough places there to give good advice though. Otherwise, Fort Lauderdale beach, like either around Beach Place or close to Sunrise (a bar McSorley's is near there) is a nice place to check out with a lot going on.

The other fun spot is River Front in Fort Lauderdale. A few good spots to drink and eat on 2nd Ave (also called Himmershee).

I'll leave off Miami. ;o)

I've heard that from some people. I guess it depends on what you get. I go for about 4 games a year. It's bar food w/ some NOLA items. I've only tried a few things and no complaints. I generally just watch and drink though. A couple of my friends get the shrimp and grits every time and love 'em.

Main reason I go is because every Sunday I sit on my patio alone and watch the game. So a few times a season, I make the 40 minute drive to hang out with a bar full of fellow Who Dats. Makes me feel like I'm back home.
I think the charbroiled oysters was the most disappointing. The Red Beans and Rice were not very good (which I always felt was impossible to mess up) and the crawfish etouffee didn't taste like anything. I think we did like the bread pudding though. Again, super nice people. I wanted to like it so badly. Usually after a bad meal at a place I just don't bother, but I came back anyway. The second time around I think I had the oyster poboy. It was just plain hoagie bread (which was expected) but the oysters were nasty. Too salty and over-cooked I think. I made up for both visits by draining several Abitas. The second visit deterred me from swinging by for their crawfish boil.

I will probably stop by and catch a couple games this season though, but probably will refrain from eating. As long as they have Abita flowing I will find something to spend money on.

The reviews mostly talk about how good the food was and how bad the service is and the experience was exactly the opposite for us. They were pretty busy and we were never left wanting anything. One chick even picked up on my accent which has gotten more slight over the years.

See, that's the exact reason I stay away from the oysters most of the time, and etouffee... people are more likely to be very particular about those items, so that's why they're generally dissapointed. I know which Creole dishes I'm most picky about, so I just know to never order them anywhere other than where I know I like them. Or in some cases, I know to only eat it when certain people cook it in their homes. ;)

I just started asking the regulars what they usually ordered and worked from that and I haven't been dissapointed. They have a really good brunch too.

Service is usually good. I think most complaints were from the Superbowl week where they were over run. Also, if you're at the bar, I will say it depends on who's bartending. There are a couple that are lightning quick. Also, certain tables are just in bad spots when it's crowded, so servers can never get to you. I think the hardest time I ever had was when I was sitting at the little two person high table near the front door. It's perfectly half way between everything, so you're at the end of the line so to speak.

Just like any place, you get better treatment when half the place knows your name. So, it's been a very long time since I ever had the slightest issue.

I just assumed that they were trying to cater to the east coast crowd that enjoy tasteless food...

Update for those that haven't been in a while. The Dive expanded into the section next door.

Now, for Saints games (maybe LSU too?) everyone is in the side room with the projector and big screen TV. It's all piped for sound. It's a bit odd, not having the core around the bar, but we're adjusting. haha. If we keep winning, we might not all fit in there anymore.

They also remodeled and moved the bathrooms. Much much nicer.
