Maybe Tony Blair should shut the heck up! Not sure what he's attempting to accomplish with these remarks.

"It's really quite alarming and dangerous, where Iraq is now. It's quite frightening," he told CNN.
"Iraq is slipping continuously into a chaotic level of violence. "To be honest, this is not something that I could have imagined when we fought Saddam's regime."

I believe what he is trying to accomplish is "telling the truth", unlike some members of our own government.

But how can he possibly trust his own subj, uh, citizens to handle the truth? How could they possibly know better? Don't they need to be protected from themselves?

I'd say the guy got pulled in kicking and screaming. Bush called in the 51st state marker and dragged the UK into it. It was 100% Bush's call, and the buck should stop with him.

I just wish we would bring everyone home. Frankly, does anyone really care that the Sunni and the Shia are gonna slaughter each other? If they can't act like reasonable humans, that's their problem. Not ours.

That would be an appropriate gesture, but I think you are confusing him with someone who had some real power to avert this.

He might have kept his own people out of the mess but it was going to happen regardless of what stance he took.

Well, its a "what if" game. But you have to remember Blair was out there pretty early - supporting Bush and his invasion plans. At the very least Blair added a hefty dose of legitimacy to the plan. Without a doubt he helped Bush out on the international front. I think he had a big effect on this country. The 50% or so of the public who aren't apt to support Bush (even in 2002-03) were soothed somewhat by Blair's support for the war.
Ultimately you are more than likely right - but I found it hard to believe we went into this type of war the way we did, I can only imagine how hard it would have been if the Azores summit was held without Blair.
