Is the move to 3-4 partly because of the new style QBs? (1 Viewer)

seems a OLB has the ability to tackle the QB or RB better than a DE, so the league bringing in these new running option qbs , we need more athletes on D.

I was thinking the same thing. I believe at some point, Payton's suspension will server us well. Part of that may be adapting his team for the future he sees in the NFL.

The OLBs are also much better at containing them inside the pocket. It would help a lot against the read option.

Reasons we are moving to a 3-4 defense.

1) Our players have become better suited for a 34 rather than a 43, whether intentional or not.

2) We will be the only team in the NFC south running a 34 defense.

3) Flexability and confusion. It is a more complex defense for QBs to identify protections blitzers and coverages.

4) It is just working better in the NFL.
Top 3 defenses this season ran a 34 or a hybrid 43. Both teams in the Super Bowl run a 34. 3 of the top 4 teams in the Championship games ran a 34. Bottom 3 teams all ran a 43. This has become a common trend since 2009, 34 defenses just perform better from week to week.

5) The last few seasons the draft has been loaded with 34 talent that it is hard to work around from a 43. Guys like JJ Watt, Aldon Smth, Clay Mathews, Von Miller, etc. It is also easier to find 34 DE, NT and LBs later in the draft. It makes the DE position go from one of the most difficult and expensive positions to find in the NFL to one of the easiest and cheapest.

6) To run a good 43 defense you really need good players at every position. To run a good 34 defense you just need a few good players and it allows you to hide players inabilities better.

7) It is easier to stop the run without dropping 8 guys in the box.

8) It is easier to get negative plays either from sack or tackle for loss because it is harder to block upfront.

9) It is easier to get pressure with just 4 or 5 guys because it is harder for offensive lines to know where the 4th and 5th rushers are coming from. So less need to blitz and even less need to send an all out blitz.

Every team in the NFC south is going to have to throw out the film with the full time switch to a 3-4 on the Saints.

Not if we keep the same personnel

Remember GW ran this scheme sometimes.

If you can block the front, our horrific dumpster fire of a secondary led by jenksin and harper are waiting to be exploited.

Personnel Personnel personnel !!!!

The main reason is it's relatively easier to find middle of the road or good line backers these days compared to 4-3 ends.

The main reason teams run a 4-3, on the other hand, is that it's hard to find pass rushing OLBs that can also do reasonably well when asked to play pass defense.

BTW, it's almost 50/50 in the NFL now, especially with us switching: http://www.drafttek.com/teamother2012.html

Its easier to find 3-4 ends and ILBS for the scheme
But tough to find OLBs as you mentioned and also that important Nose DT.

i thought atlanta switched to 3-4 last year after they hired nolan?

Look at our record too.
6 out of our 9 losses were to 3-4 teams. Only two 4-3 teams beat us, NYG and CAR.
