A couple of weeks ago, on a leisurely Sunday afternoon, 40 people gathered at a church in Washington Heights for a show-and-tell session sponsored by the New York City Preppers Network. One by one, they stood in front of the room and exhibited their “bug-out bags,” meticulously packed receptacles filled with equipment meant to see them through the collapse of civilization.

Aton Edwards, 51, teaching a class this month via Skype on disaster preparedness.
Onto a folding table came a breathtaking array of disaster swag: compasses and iodine pills, hand-cranked radios and solar-powered flashlights, magnesium fire-starters and a fully charged Kindle with digital road maps of the tristate region. Many of the items on display went far beyond the “10 Basic Pillars of Bug-Out Gear” that Jason Charles, the network’s leader, had passed out in advance through the Internet.

A good number were tweaked to fit their owners’ needs and interests. A locksmith in the group had a lock-picking set. A vegetarian had a stash of homemade dehydrated lentils. One man had a condom designed to serve as an emergency canteen; another had a rat trap — to catch and eat the rats.

Do you have a preppers continuity plan? And an inventory of necessary medicine, goods, water, and other survival goods? Do you also have semi-automatic rifles, hand guns, and other weapons are part of your inventory?

If someone does not own a firearm; should they consider buying a firearm? Also if you live in a restrictive gun environment? Should you consider moving to a more gun friendly state?

I would imagine you can get a lot of good stuff on ebay now that the Mayans were wrong. I have been meaning to get the show on my DVR. I caught one episode - interesting stuff they do.

But to answer your question, sometimes but rarely really.

I seek to be. First thing first, guns and ammo. no point in stock piling certain foods, water or medicines if you can't protect it.

This whole zombie apocalypse thing is getting old.

On the real, if I were to go to someone's house and they had a bomb shelter and stock of assault rifles and canned goods to last for a decade, I would immediately know that that person was not on the same wavelength as me.

It's all cute to make the joke on the internet, but when did actually being crazy become socially acceptable?

I have a bottle of whiskey and a few boxes of ammo put away in case of emergency. I'm counting on a short apocalypse.

I am thinking about buying a gun but only because I have actually been crazy not to have one for so many years in my line of work. Now that I actually started thinking of getting one, I am going to seem like I got caught up in hysteria. So my dilemma is to keep risking my life or feel like just part of the herd

Yes, I wore many Duck Head Khakis while in college....

If there is an apocalypse, I really can't see somebody staunchly sticking to vegetarianism.:jpshakehead:

I've been asking myself this same question and the answer I keep coming back to is 9/11. That seems to be the moment that things like prepping, rampant conspiracy theories, etc. crossed over from the fringes into mainstream culture.

Don't get me wrong, all that stuff existed way, way before then and you can make the argument it was building up before then (I remember otherwise rational people talking about how Clinton was going to declare martial law and give himself more terms), but that seems to be when the dam burst, so to speak.

And the rise of the internet played a big role in it, as well. It's no coincidence that this stuff took off when 9/11 happened, which was also right around the time most of the U.S. was finally getting online. That allowed everyone's grandmothers and aunts to start forwarding completely untrue, scare mongering emails, it allowed for faster dissemination of bad news, conspiracy theories, baseless opinions people take as gospel, etc. That this was followed by two eras of severe political division (the Bush and Obama years) and social strife (the economic collapse) combined to make a perfect storm of paranoia and fear.

Anyway, to answer the original question, I'm not a prepper, but I do like to be prepared (mostly for weather related issues. We get lots of tornado activity here and have terrible, obsolete utilities as a city.) Canned goods, food, water, emergency supplies, etc. But I do not have a room in which I'm stocking up for the apocalypse.

Prepper, as in 5,000 pounds of oats. 4 tons of flour and an underground maze of tunnels and bunkers? Then no.

I will however begin some prepping as soon as I finish building my house. The apocalypse needs to hold off a few more months. Nothing crazy, just enough to get by a few weeks. If I need to go longer than that, we are screwed anyway.

A bug out bag and a few supplies on shelves will be my limit. I am planning for something like an extended power outage rather than the collapse of society. Plenty of spare propane bottle for my portable stove, jugs of water, some canned goods and a small generator to power my connection to SR.com.

this seems reasonable and I would do this much. I guess maybe I am just thinking about the lunatics like they put on the show.

I have a friend who became a prepper/survivalist after Katrina... He has stockpiled Coelman fuel, dry goods in food quality 5 gallon buckets, ammo.. water filtration equipment and many other things... He put my wife and I in his survival group because we both work in medicine and I hunt and fish....So if something does happen, I've got that going for me....
