Has anyone thought about John Gruden as our DC? His defense was always pretty stout when he was with TB, and I know him and Payton are pretty close.

For some reason people look at Tampa's D and assume Gruden was a big part of that. John Gruden has always been an offensive minded guy.

Guys, I get what your saying and I know he has always been an OC or HC, but think about it, just because you are an OC, doesn't mean you don't know how to be a great DC. I played football for 14 years, and every year of that was spent on defense. You know what my biggest job was every week? To learn the opposing teams offense. I mean really? Who knows defense better than an OC??

I almost just want the Saints to hurry and hire someone so people quit posting "Gruden as our DC?"! Trying to stay patient :covri:

Jon Gruden had MONTE KIFFIN (one of best DCs of all time) as DC when he was with the Bucs - that is the primary reason those defenses were pretty stout. Highly doubt Gruden was heavily involved in developing defensive schemes when he was with TB...

Because it's one thing for a coach to be good at knowing how to attack a defense, but it's a whole 'nother thing for a coach to come up with a plan on how to stop an offense.

You just don't see moves like this at the NFL level (Juan Castillo notwithstanding). This isn't park league or high school football. These NFL guys are a lot more specialized than any coach you've ever dealt with in your 14 years of playing.
