Marlin sinks boat

A fisherman off Panama was battling a huge black marlin when the battle took a turn for the worse. The fish sank the boat.

Or as Marlin Magazine put it on its Facebook post, "Marlin Wins!"

Not all the details are in, but apparently the captain began backing down on the huge fish, a common practice in big-game fishing when a fish is taking line. He puts the boat in reverse to chase the fish.

One commenter on Marlin Magazine's Facebook post who apparently had some knowledge of the incident said that the captain fell as he was backing down on the fish at full throttle. The boat took on too much water and, finally, there was no correcting the situation.

A hooked marlin sinks a fishing boat? Well, something like that

Similar thing happened to me and my cousin, back in the day, when he hooked a gar on a canepole in the pirogue. A big trawling skiff happened to pass and push a big wake and sunk the pirogue.

If the story is true I'd find it hard to believe the Marlin was actually the cause. Now maybe the captain was reversing the boat to quick but seeing the water fairly calm just don't seem right the fish was the cause.

Anybody hear from DTC lately?

Not me, but when I saw that a few days ago I made a mental note that kill switches need to be installed at both helms on my boat.

Having nearly fallen off the tower of my boat in heavy seas cobia fishing a few years back, I see how this could happen if it was rough, but man those waters look pretty calm to not be able to get back to the driver's station. Seems someone on the lower deck should have been able to react quickly enough before they screwed themselves silly, but crazy things happen.

All I know is the guy fighting the fish must be complete deaf because the sound that thing made when the prop started spinning free should have scared them all into reaction mode.

DTC would have had enough beer cans to keep that boat a float.

Yes, perhaps. Also easy access crash pumps and commercial sized can of compressed spray foam on board at all times.

I may not be a cajun, but being born in SELA I can assure you that would not have happened to me.

Not sure I feel complimented by the two of you seeing a sinking boat hooked to a marlin and think of me. Hmmm telling me something?
