and reason Romeo Crennel would not take job.
I can give you 6.5 million reasons why Romeo Crennel will likely not be the next defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. That’s the amount of money it would cost him to take the job with New Orleans. Crennel is still being paid on a 3 year deal he signed with Kansas City in 2012. The Chiefs fired Crennel after one season, but are still on the hook for that money. Sure, Crennel can forgo the money, but at 65 would that be a smart move? And, would it be the long term answer for Sean Payton?

Don't shoot me!

It is my understanding he would still have his remaining income suplemented by the Chiefs. So if he is due $6.5 and the saints hire him for $1 million, the Chiefs would still pick up the remaining $5.5 mil. I could see how he wouldn't feel like working this year though. It's like he's working for free and nobody would pay a DC more than $6.5 million.

This. This has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum since the Spags firing.

Then be creative. Pay him a dollar for each of the first two years and sign him to a longer term contract, say 4 years at 6.5 mil/year the last two years with an escape clause. That way you get him for just over 3 mil per year and at the end of the contract he's going to be ready to retire anyway, and if things don't work out we can dump him when we want. Good for everybody.

So this morning NFL Radio reported that Schefter is saying that Ryan will be the next DC. Ross Tucker pointed out that Ryan isn't even interviewing until Friday and suggested maybe Ryan is leaking that he will be hired. Frankly, given that the media tend to try to "scoop" everyone else--sometimes with a LOT of speculation behind the "news" (see Mortenson, Chris)--I am going to wait until the Saints themselves make an announcement concerning whom they have hired.

Did anyone ever consider that Ryan is the best guy AVAILABLE? He may not be the best candidate...but that doesn't matter if you are blocked from speaking to all the good position coaches out there. I hope that this Karma comes back to bite the 49ers. The Saints have always treated their people well.

I don't see why everyone is so high on Crennel. The Saints personnel don't jive well with the 2-gap system. Believe it or not...1-gap and 2-gap are significantly different. Crennel is a good coach...don't get me wrong...but he would be in the same position as Spags as the Saints DC...years away from fielding a respectable product.

Grantham & Ryan are both 1-gap guys who should immediately improve the defense. I know that people hate the Ryans... but let's move past the personality deal. That has nothing to do with football.

Sure. He's not pretty. Lets just trust in Sean and Mickey. Can we? Remember how hung go we all were on Spags? Man were we wrong! Hopefully were wrong again thinking Rob Ryan is wrong. Who cares anyway. All we need is a top 20 defense to win a SB, right?
