Draft Zone Spotlight: Stefan Charles, DL, University of Regina (Canada) University of Regina DL Stefan Charles, is a very athletic 6’5 and 310 and a Canadian college player entering this year’s NFL Draft. NFL scouts think he’s a good fit for an NFL 3-4 team as a “5 tech” defensive end, much like the 49ers Justin Smith. He has a huge wingspan and played with Saints 3rd Round Pick Akiem Hicks in 2011 at the University of Regina. In 22 career games (3 seasons), Stefan posted 20.5 Tackles For Loss, 10.5 Sacks, and 56.5 Total Tackles. In comparison, for his career, Akiem Hicks played in 16 games and posted 12 Tackles For Loss, 8 sacks, and 56 Total Tackles. These two big D-linemen had comparable statistics and are comparably sized players. If you look it up, you will see that NFL teams like these Canadian big guys- DL Vaughn Martin was drafted in the 4th Round by the San Diego Chargers in 2009 and DL Akiem Hicks was drafted in the 3rd Round by the New Orleans Saints. So make sure you check out the University of Regina star, who will be making his way to the NFL
Q: What is the best accolade/award you have ever received from playing football?
A: In 2011, I was named Defensive Player of the Week when I had sacks on 3 straight plays.

I really like this kid! If we scouted and drafted Hicks, we have to have looked at this kid. He is eerily similar to Hicks in playing style. Both are big, long and nimble d-linemen. The least we could do is bring him in for a workout and possibly as a camp body. I think he could be an Israel Idonije type of player. Bring him on down Loomis!

Thanks for the post NOFALCONS10! Ive been looking high and low for more info on this kid. Good find!

Hicks is currently being projected as the DE opposite Jordan.

Well, we could use more depth, thats for sure. Besides, we arent sure what type of 3-4 we are running yet. It sure wouldn't hurt to bring him in for a good look, see. Its a shame! He says his favorite NFL team is the Atlanta Falcons. May God have mercy on his soul! Come on down to Nawlins, Stefan.

Let's get the guy who thought drafting Hicks was a mistake because he played against him in Canada's opinion...

Where is he?

:hihi:

pick him up in the 6th and plug him in at DE next to Hicks.

I was just thinking about some low risk, high reward talent that might possibly give us the most bang for our buck on Defense with low round draft picks.

Akiem Hicks turned out to be as talented as some players taken in the top 20 and his teammate Charles almost doubled his TFL stats in only six more games and might have better arm length and lateral agility for a DE.

Outside of Lotelelei, Datone Jones, and Josh Boyd, the pickings are pretty slim at 3-4 DE.

Guys like:

Stefan Charles (DE)
Devin Taylor (OLB)
Armonty Bryant (OLB)
Anthony Rashard White (NT)

Might be able to provide high production for less than the cost of a 3rd round pick.

Scouts at the CFL combine said that he was more talented and more consistent than hicks in the article I posted in the draft thread.

Thats completely wrong! Hicks will never play DE in this league and i mean NEVER he would need to drop about 30 lbs and get quicker to do it and its not gonna happen he is the best option we have at a true NT hes BIG and has a crazy wingspan and next to cam they will hold 4 of the 5 lineman! thats w=the whole point of moving to a 3-4 so our player better fit the system! If we end up keeping will smith which im not sure we do if he wont restructure then he will play opposite of Cam at the DE position!

AKIEM HICKS WILL NOT PLAY DE EVER PLEASE STOP SAYING THAT!

Haloti Ngata: 6'4" 330 and he seems to be a pretty darn good DE in a 3-4 scheme.

Akeem Hicks: 6'5" 324

So please explain why Hicks would not work out as a DE again.

DE in a 3-4 and DE in a 4-3 are different types of players, I think you are thinking of a 4-3. Yes Hicks will never play DE in a 4-3, but a 3-4, yes he can, not saying he will, just saying he can.

Actually no unfourtunately thats not true in a 4-3 he is a DT in a 3-4 he is a NT no way he plays DE hes too BIGG to slow and PERFECT to fill hole and hold up 2 possibly 3 guys on the O line.

a NT in a 3-4 does nothing besides hold up some Oline more than 1 hopefully and push the pocket towards the DE and the rushing OLB thats why they dont have as many sacks as those other positions and also why the NT is considered one of the most important positions on a 3-4 defense.

*yaaaawwwnnnnn* same people saying hicks can't play DE are the same folks saying bunkley can't play NT, even tho he was a straight up beast NT for the broncos before he came here.
