Saints are willing to look past warning signs with Rob Ryan (1 Viewer)

I found this interesting:

"Former Saints and Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita said last week while discussing the 3-4 defense that he enjoyed the freedom and input Ryan gave him during their two years together in Cleveland (2009-2010)."

I wonder if Payton and/or Loomis, who I think respect Fujita, spoke to him about Ryan as a culture fit for the team?

I'm crossing my fingers that Grantham doesn't leave N.O. without a contract as our new DC. If the decision was already made on Ryan, then why even interview anyone else? It's not like Grantham is a token black guy, and this is to honor that stupid "Rooney Rule".

Grantham is white.

I know, thats my point.

My apologies then.
Then i don't know. There is so much information out there. It all can't be true and it all can't be false. SO we'll just have to wait I guess. I can't say i'd be super excited wit either. I could live with Ryan.....but I could live with Grantham a tiny bit more.

Figures ... we are pursuing a coach with warning signs. There are plenty of coaches without warning signs. We just can't do things the sane way.

"The knock on Ryan in previous stops was that he didn't have very sound principles, and that he didn't always find the right balance between when to blitz and when to cover."

This is the biggest thing you all should be concerned with outside of personnel. Don't worry about his personality... that doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

Ryan seems to try to outsmart everyone, but in doing so over thinks. He doesn't appear to have a good feel of how to game plan. He was able to dial up some nice plays toward the end of the year, so he has the ability, but I don't know how many times I saw our best pass rushers drop back into coverage and rush three down lineman (none of them being particularly good pass rushers). More than one occasion, you could find DeMarcus Ware playing a safety type role after the ball was snapped.

He has a lot of exotic and unsuccessful schemes that will make you want to tear your hair out.

See thats what scares me. A defense takes on the personality of its D coordinator. If he doens't pay attention to detail then what do u think will happen to the defense. Silly penalties and more bad tackling. I want a guy who preaches fundamentals. Im over the whole "his guys like to play for him thing"

Ive read that he tends to lose focus a lot...and it shows. He may know a lot but i don't think he is as good of a play caller as 3G. Same principles same style etc etc..but as a playcaller i don't think he is anywhere near Gregg or his brother Rex.

Do i need to post another video of Georgias Defense?

Im torn but as of right now id rather Grantham. If Ryan gets hired then ill support it but i won't like it. A retread makes sense in that he is 3G lite and all but Grantham oversaw a 4-3 to 3-4 switch. Im not sure Ryan has ever done that.

Exactly.

The only reason that amoeba defense worked against us is because they gambled we would come out with a passing gameplan and we did.

Had we focused on rushing the ball when it wasn't predictable we would have gashed the browns A LOT. Sometimes us passing the ball a lot works against us.

Grantham is known for being a great teacher. And though his personality is far less dynamic than Ryan's, he also had a good reputation for being liked and respected by players

True dat, but I can live with either a whole heckuva lot more than Spagnuolo.

Rex might be a good coach...but how good is he@ developing the players hes coaching?

Grantham has several Georgia defenders going in the 1st round and several more going in the next 6. He must be at least decent @ developing talent right. He has guys going from every level of the Defense. Dline, Safety, LB, CB. He has guys from every position what will be looked@ during this draft.

I think the Rooney rule only applies to head coach vacancies.
