Anyone here roped off sections of the neutral ground or set up furniture out there for this weekends parades?

I thought this was going to be about Creoles vs. Americans since we already had one history thread.

I have never roped anything off but some of those people are fanatics and believe that they actually own that stretch of land. I try to be considerate to people who sit out all night for that stuff but I have had people get belligerent with me because I was to close to their blanket. Some people need to get a life.

are you expecting people to admit it if they had?
it's a pretty **** thing to do, and kind of contra to the whole mardi gras vibe - but i can't imagine that the police can/will really do anything about it

I live close enough to St. Charles that I don't have to camp out anywhere, in fact I don't bring anything with me except a drink. When I need another, I go home an make another.

I does irk me that there are people that think they own the neutral ground because they used some twine to segregate themselves. It is almost as bad as people that put out cones in the pulic street to reserve themselfs a parking spot in front of their house.

Not a fan of it. I don't care if you and your family have been watching Endymion at Orleans and wherever for the last 20 year, I'm just walking here and you don't own it. Get over it.

That why I don't do Endymion on Orleans.

I don't see why someone wouldn't admit to doing it. Clearly they don't feel like they are doing anything wrong (and people have admitted to some really ****ed up things on here before).

I'd really, honestly, like to hear their take on the matter. Because once you're out at a parade, it isn't like rational conversation will prevail.

One of the best things about Mardi Gras, IMO, has always been the ability to just walk up and enjoy the festivities. That's tough to do in New Orleans, especially at the Super Krewe parades because of all the spots that are claimed.
I live in Slidell, and we probably have about 7-10 parades that roll each year. The "big" one is the Selene, which rolls tonight. There are campers, cars, and other vehicles, chairs, etc - that have been strategically placed in claimed spots for this parade. In Slidell. Where the crowds are 4 deep at best. Lmao.

I think it's ridiculous and takes away from the fun and freedom to just walk up and enjoy yourself. Now, it's not likely that you're always going to be standing right up front if you're very late getting there, but still, the roping off and battling for public space that you make personal on a temporary basis is crazy.

They should make a law against it.

There basically are laws against it based on all of the rules that the ladders are supposed to follow and rules against putting "furniture" on the neutral ground, but they are essentially impossible to enforce. NOPD simply does not have the manpower to enforce those rules.

FWIW, I have no issue with people setting up on the side of the neutral ground away from the parade or even putting up kid's ladder that are 8 foot back and 8 to 10 feet apart, but the walls of ladders and cooking equipment is dangerous and really stops anyone who doesn't either live up the street or camp out for two days from enjoying the parade season. It was not like this when I was a kid. What should work is to have those ladder apart enough and have the camps far enough back that people can actually get in front and between them to see the parade. Of course, people are selfish and suck so that's never going to happen.

I agree with her.

Its the walls of ladders that are connected by 25 ft square of 1/2" rope.

Same reason we stopped attending Sat/Sun uptown. 7 years ago i had my 2 yr old hit in the face with beads ( during Thoth- and to this day, if I could have snatched that guy who beamed her, i would have ) tried to retreat from the area only to find EVERY SINGLE avenue roped off with at least one person stating " Go around". It got pretty ugly when I used my foot to press down on the rope and walk thru a host of coolers, chairs and blankets just to get to the other side of St. Charles.

That day sapped all the fun out of it for me. I still have no urge to get anywhere near St. Charles w/ my two girls.
