Probably the most central, and definitely one of the most puzzling, questions that I have about Rob Ryan is about his ability to scout talent. During the Payton/Loomis era, we have consistently invested many of our highest draft picks to improve the defense with startlingly little success. Not to state the obvious, but stacked rosters like San Fran and Baltimore really highlight the importance of simply identifying talent, something SP has done incredibly well on the offensive side of the ball. Especially given the impending overhaul and current cap situation, finding talent at a bargain is more important now than ever before.

I think we moved to the 3-4 most of all because it suits much more effectively the talent we already have (ie Cam, Hicks, Tez, Junior, Lofton). Is there any evidence that RR can scout with the best of 'em? His days in Dallas probably aren't great to look to, considering Jerry's ridiculous control over personnel.

Well my friend look up Ryan's tenures with every team he has been on n loon up tr draft classes each year. I know the boys have been great at finding OLBs but I don't know if Ryan was around for that. Def a valid question though. Hopefully he has a great vision for this type of thing and lands us a home run in the 1st round

bruce carter and morris claiborne for dallas

kaluka maiava, tj ward, joe haden and larry asante for the browns

fabian washington, stanford routt, michael huff, thomas howard, and tyvon branch for the raiders

seems like hes doing alright to me

He has some general inputs like the type of skillset he needs but I don't think he has anymore say in the matter than any other DCs that have came and went.

I think this is one of the most important questions, and it is probably going to be up to how much input SP takes from him. We all know that there are some issues with some defensive positions, but that is for a 4-3 defense (while I am no defense brainiac) and I believe the 3-4 requires a different set of skills by each position.

It will be interesting to see which, if any, FA they target. That should give us a small glimpse as to where the emphasis is being placed.

If nothing else, it is going to be a very interesting year for us all.

The 3-4 is also generally considered to be cheaper to fill with personnel than the 4-3..

Your entire DL could be cheaper contracts.. OLBs could demand money, but they're also the guys you could probably find in every draft (athletic freaks).. ILBs wouldn't cost as much.. CBs and Safeties would be about the same..

You're swapping the costly 4-3 DE and MLB spots for cheaper positions to fill..

Many of San Francisco's top picks looked like marginal players-to-busts until properly utilized.

Michael Crabtree was disappointing with Alex Smith as well, he caught "fire" when Kaepernick, someone with the arm and the guts to go down field, took over.

Vernon Davis was a bust until Harbaugh.

Alex Smith himself was complete abject bust and was made into, at least, a marginal starter.

Ray McDonald on defense? 13 tackles, zero sacks, zero starts in 2010 before Harbaugh.
Navarro Bowman? Backup in 2010, starter in 2011

In fact, under Harbaugh and the genius talent evaluation of the current 49er administration, only 2 defensive contributors have been drafted. Aldon Smith of course and nickel back Chris Culliver.

The reason Harbaugh and his staff is praised isn't they are amazing at talent evaluation. It's that they took players dismissed as busts and turned them into starters and stars. I.e. coaching.

We don't need a 3 year rebuilding plan and expert talent evaluation. We need a defensive coach to coach players.

Would you agree that Ryan needs the authority to bring in his own Assistants for the Defense?

and that if we continue to have the same struggles on the Defensive side that Payton needs to take a thorough look at replacing Joe Vitt, and Bill Johnson from their respective positions?

Would anyone be upset if we signed Abram Elam and drafted Matt Elam ??

Well....yeah obviously. Is that in question? I understand there are some contract considerations with the assistants but since we're switching schemes, logically, you have to empower whoever is doing the switching to bring in the right guys to teach the appropriate techniques. That said, its possible that in interviews he decides the guys on staff are appropriately familiar with what he needs taught.

In other words, whose to say that of the available candidates whoever we have on staff arent the best option. I don't know one way or the other, but you have to assume that a) Ryan has a fair amount of input on his own assistants and therefore b) whoever is kept on has at least tacit approval of Ryan.

The only "deal breaker" guy I can imagine on the staff is Joe Vitt. And let's just say I have a bit of a soft spot in my heart for Vitt these days as well.

Why would Sean Payton let Ryan hire his own coaches? Isn't the head coach the one who gets fired when the team goes South???

Each head coach assembles his own coaching staff, college and pro.

Very true. I think what we also to mention is the offenses he's played with. If the O cant score, and is always playing from behind, it puts so much on the shoulders of the D. When consistently playing from behind, your D cant do certain things. I'm excited to see what his D can do when playing with the fire power we field on O.

Its not only scouting ability, but teaching ability as well. Is not enough to find talent, the harder work is develop the talented players properly. With the change of the scheme, all related teachings of a 4&3 system has to be changed to the new 3&4 system.
DM Ware was pretty high on RR's teaching ability. I'm pretty sure he will be a good teacher here too.
