12-year-old US student arrested for plot to kill classmates | NDTV.com

A 12-year-old middle school student in California has been detained for plotting to shoot 23 classmates and a teacher as officials seized a cache of rifles and handguns from his home.

The student in Poway, California, sent a threatening email over the weekend to a Twin Peaks Middle School administrator stating he planned to shoot a teacher and 23 fellow students at the school on Monday morning.

[...]

The email threat, which was sent to a school administrator on Friday night, made reference to 3,000 rounds of ammunition as well as numerous firearms in the planned shooting at the Poway middle school located, said officials.

[...]

On Saturday, the 7th grade student was taken into custody and admitted to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Detectives believe the boy planned to act alone and say there is no evidence to suggest anyone else was involved in making the threats.

Looks like we avoided one. Not all of these kids are going to be dumb enough to give themselves away ahead of time. Thankfully he wasn't simply ignored.

They don't say where he got these items, or who they belong to. No mention of parents or anything.

Something is wrong with our kids. The usual suspects will be thrown out as explanations like bullying, home life, movies, video games, gun shows (apparently they sell to 12 year olds, right?), etc. Is it really that simple?

Update from below:

Kid did not have access to any weapons as outlined in this article...

The captain said that none of the weapons seized were assault weapons, and that the 12-year-old did not have access to them.

Funny how a British news organization knows more about this than we do.

crazy... something is definitily wrong with our youth. Must be the video games ... actually that was a joke, I will go ahead and blame the media for making celebrities out of head cases.

My son turns 12 today. No way in my most far-reaching imagination could I picture him doing anything even close to this maniacal.

Just make guns illegal for kids to own and that should solve the problem.

Thanks for finding that.

Considering how they discovered the student, it actually crossed my mind that maybe someone else sent the email from the kid's house knowing that there were weapons there.

The fact that he emailed the school screams he was being deprived of attention. He just wanted to be noticed.

I often find that you can get closer to the truth when you look for news outside of the US.

Could it be that today's youth have no respect for individuals or that they're too babyfied and lack discipline?

do you get where i'm going with this?

Video games, violent TV, movies have to have some effect on crazies already on the edge. Network TV is one shooting show after another each night.

The world has always been a ****** place full of people killing other people. This is nothing new. It didn't just start. The vast majority of kids grow up to be pretty reasonable citizens, as they always have. Perfect? No, but who is? And yes, their generation faces unique problems due to their time period. As every generation has faced unique problems.

And hey, if we're going to blame entire generations for this kind of stuff, why not start with the baby boomers. So many complaints people seem to have about young generations unquestionably started with them.

Update from below:

I'd add to the equation the psychiatric meds we are loading our kids with, or rather, the side effects or withdrawal from those meds. Does strange things to brain chemistry if not titrated down properly. If a kid is missing doses or rapidly quits taking, say, Prozac, the results can be troubling to say the least.

I truly believe that the overmedication and mismanagement of those medications are one of the main factors.

I guarantee if someone are looking at all these cases, they would find these kids/young adults on tons of prescribed medications that they recently quit taking.

Let's not get ridiculous. Just make it illegal for them to own assault rifles and hiigh capacity magazines.

What does "not have access to them" mean? Were they in a gun safe? Did they have trigger locks on them? Did his parents give him a stern talkin' to on touching daddies toys without permission?

Why does your link completely devoid of details carry such credibility? I mean, beyond conforming to your preconceived world view (which of course automatically guarantees 100% authenticity)?
