What to expect with the move to the 3-4: Personnel and Scheme (1 Viewer)

Well if Mingo is there he's my top choice. Than DJ Fluker.

But both Richardson or Hankins for the defensive line would be exciting.

Yeah if someone like Mingo/Jones/Jordan falls i think you have to take either one. Though i think dion Jordan is a bit of a reach @ 15.

Fluker would be a luxury in my OP. We kept Marcel Jones around for a reason. So its he and strief@ RT for right now which is solid..and we usually keep a LT that can swing to RT. So we are already 3 deep@ that position depending on what we do@ LT in FA.

Richardson i was sold on i swear to play LDE in a 1gap.. i share your enthusiasm for him. With that being said if Will Smith stays around then going Richardson would be another luxury.

Hankins could be an option as well though but i still think its too high for a NT when you already have Hicks/Bunk to man the NT position in a 1gap.

You see if im thinking is correct then a 1 gap would be the fastest transition. It allows guys like Vilma/Smith who aren't 2gappers to stay for another year while you make the complete transition. That means Hicks can be behind bunkley for a year while we groom another NT.

Next year when guys like Vilma/Smith are gone and you have your NT groomed. Bunkley becomes a cut option or a restructure option @NT.

Hicks gets moved to RDE and then you have your true NT that we draft this year Hankins/Brandon then Cam Jordan @ LDE. You can still 1 gap @ times with this lineup but it allows us to run more of a traditional 3-4@ times in our second year.

possible 1st round targets @ the moment. LT/OLB/
possible mid round targets WILB/NT/CB/
possible late round targets S/WR

Though FA could change a lot of those targets. I think our depth on the line to run a 1gap 3-4 is solid right now. Thats why i didn't throw DE in there but its not out of the realm of possibilities.

Yo Dan,
I was wondering if you had a link to Payton talking about Vilma's role in the defense

Thanks

I thought Hawthornes contract was set up that even if we cut him we wouldnt save any money. I just dont see him going anywhere this year. Besides, dude is a beast. I would hope he stays.

I thik DJ Fluker is the best tackle in the draft. He's got elite talent, had NFL coaching quality this entire time, solid SEC starting experience, good games against NFL level talent like Richardson and Mingo. He's going going to be a pro bowler.

I just don't think you pass on outstanding talent regardless of position. So there'd need to be a compelling reason to pass on him for me. But I doubt it'll come up for us.

Excellent post as usual. But it does have me wondering something that you are all obviously aware of, what are TCUDans credentials?

College and semi-pro ball in Europe. Maybe something since last I heard, not sure, but more importantly he's always demonstrated a high level of competence in his analysis here.

I enjoyed Dion Jordans tape. Not sure if i label him a "playmaker" but he is a guy a creative defensive mind could have a lot of fun with.

Great stuff as always, Dan.

Would you mind elaborating on why you're not a fan of RR? What would he have to do in NO to change your thinking (in other words, what will he have to adjust to be make the defense as good as it needs to be?)?

Mostly I've just soured on the Buddy Ryan coaching tree, not just the style which is throw the kitchen sink on passing downs, but the personalities that tend to come from it. Not just his 2 sons, but Greg Williams as well.

It's not that I don't think RR can get the job done. It's that I was hoping for one of the other candidates. A lot is made that RR's track record as a DC isn't very impressive... but that's not even my issue. I think that the Buddy Ryan defense is very gimmicky. It's boom or bust. GW's defense was great in 2009... opportunistic, etc. But we also had Darren Sharper.

Anyway, he doesn't have to do anything to convert me. He's the guy Sean Payton & Mickey Loomis hired. And I totally understand the reasoning and am not second-guessing it. GW was actually a very good teacher. Rex Ryan seems like a good teacher. I'm hoping Rob Ryan is the same, and maybe a little less of a zealot than GW when it comes to sending the house, even in the last 2 minutes of a game with a lead and an NFC Championship berth on the line.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

Just kidding. Here is the only thread where I've really gone into any of my creds:

Excellent Dan.

I don't know whats better, the fact that you are a football coach in a semi-pro league and a Saints fan to boot, or that you take time out of your obviously busy schedule to post on a forum that only serves to enlighten fans.

Thats very respectable.

the Problem with those projections to 3-4 dE and 5 tech is that those players need to have long arms and be able to disengage from OTs

Only jordan and Hicks can do that probably

those DTs, Johnson, Bunkley, Walker don't have the long arms to do that....so they are miscast since they can't play NT either....excpet maybe Bunkley until we find an upgrade at 330 lb behemoth somewhere

if Mingo and Jordan are there we have to get one of them....have to absolutely.

Both can rush the edge violently and affect the QB and also contain the edge on fast RBs and read option Qbs.
Both can drop back in coverage and Jordan is better here.
Mingo is probably a better rusher now but Jordan at 6-7 is faster and has a higher ceiling...

They will need to get stronger and add 10 lbs to hold up as full time rushers but for now they would be our best pass rusher day 1.

I like Fluker a lot too. And to be honest, at this point I am not sure if don't need one but two starting offensive tackles. Fluker at least can handle the right tackle for years to come.

If we don't need to get either rush linebacker or offensive tackle, my preference will be Kenny Vaccaro (who will solve the safety problem and allow IAQ and Jenkins to more suitable positions), or invest in the future and get Alec Ogletree.

I like the route you're taking.

Completely on board with Fluker in the first and wouldn't be upset if Hankins (sp) DT was the pick.

Another guy I like for the third round is the tall CB from LSU. Therold Simon.

If we pass on the tackle in the first and third rounds, I hope there's a diamond in the rough for tackle in the fourth.

I have held off on giving my assessment....

Awesome article.

Although I dont know about this one line....

I would choose my words wisely before comparing him to JJ Watt, who is far and away the most productive 3-4 DE to ever play the game.

I would not go that far yet. You are putting him up against...
Richard Dent,
Dan Hampton,
Howie Long,

and Bruce Smith
