Even though our pass rush has sucked I still have worries about our secondary. Greer has had only one season where he made it through healthy and P.Rob continues to be an inconsistent player.

I see that Panthers Chris Gamble is likely to be a cap casualty for the Panthers this year after spending most of the season on IR with a shoulder injury. He had a great 2011 Season playing as their #1 corner and was having a good one at the beginning of this season.

PFF:
A real bounce back year for Gamble as the cornerback was able to find the form that deserted him a season earlier. He showed his class with a string of good performances that saw him allow just 27 receptions for 338 yards whilst he was in primary coverage all year. Those kinds of numbers should let you know teams shied away from throwing at him, and when they did, they got little joy with quarterbacks picking up a 53.3 QB rating in his coverage.
Best Performance: Week 15 at Houston (+3.5)
Key Stat: Gave up just 0.68 yards per route in coverage. The third lowest of all cornerbacks in the league.

He is almost 30 and not really a big name guy, coming off an injury. 6'1, long frame, can play press man, off man, or zone. I think he is a guy who could be had for decent $$'s. We need some more competition in our secondary and at worst, P.Rob gets his head right and beats him out, or Greer gets injured and we have a good solid replacement. He knows this division very well and has good ball skills.

Thoughts?

He could be a decent stop gap option, but he never ran particularly well and he's at the age where he'll start to lose that top gear. If we're looking at him as a player for 2013 only or possibly 2013-2014, he could be worth a look.

I live here in Charlotte and have tons of exposure to the Kitties. He's a decent CB, but doesn't come up with turnovers. I do think he is a player that I'd welcome at the price.

No doubt that if he is healthy he is far better than anyone we have now. If he was good for even 2 seasons we could use him as our primary corner.

REALLY? I think Greer is better than Gamble for sure (assuming he's healthy). Gamble is a similar player to Jenkins. Good size, so-so speed, hands of stone. I think he could beat out P-rob for the second corner position if Gamble is healthy enough to play, but I doubt he would be "far better" than Greer or even Jenknins.

Not trying to bash you btw :) I'm just thinking that Greer is starting to get underrated on this board due to our debacle of a defense last season.

At the right price, Gamble could be an interesting addition to our defense.

Yeah. He's an experienced player, still young enough to contribute for the length of an NFL contract, had good size and ball skills and he's been playing really well up until a shoulder injury that IR'd him this past season. Assuming the shoulder injury isn't something that could hinder him down the road, and I can't imagine it would, he would be a great addition for us if we can get the cap room for him.

Good point. I was looking for an INT stat in the OP's blurb, so figured as much when I saw that there was none. Still a good option considering our current talent level/depth/Patrick....etc......
