There's doing the right thing - and then there's the reality of our situations. Would all that many of us really blamed this homeless man if he took the $4,000, viewing it as a chance opportunity, perhaps even from God?

But in reality, the "right thing" has no context. And this man knew what the right thing to do was. It warms your heart. Perhaps the woman will try to help him out a little more - that would also be the right thing.

Last week, Sarah Darling of Kansas City, Mo., left more than a little change behind when she dropped a donation in a homeless man’s cup.

The cup belonged to Billy Ray Harris, 55, who had been sitting in his regular spot on the sidewalk. He didn’t notice that Darling had accidentally dropped her engagement ring in with the change until he packed up for the day.

“When I finally decided to leave I got on my bike and dumped the change into my hand and there was the ring,” Harris told NBC’s Michelle Franzen.
Harris thought that the ring, a diamond and platinum sparkler, was a fake. Then he had it appraised.

“It was really worth some money,” Harris said. “Worth enough that he was ready to give me four grand right there on the spot.” Harris thought of taking the money, but said that his grandfather raised him to be honest. He knew in his heart he couldn’t take the money.

“I am not trying to say that I am no saint, but I am no devil either,” he said.

Darling realized a day later that the ring was gone. She immediately returned to Harris’ usual spot, and he was there waiting - with her ring.

“It was just such a feeling of loss when it was gone,” she told Harris. “I am eternally grateful to you.”

Homeless man on returning engagement ring: I was raised to be honest - TODAY News

awesome story. Id like to say I would have done the same as him. But I have to fund my party habit some how so I dunno.

What woman wouldn't notice her engagement ring was missing for a day? A cheating woman...

She must of had it her pocket, just came out of the piece on the side's place...

Homeless man on returning engagement ring: I was raised to be honest - TODAY News

That photo was taken down in the plaza. I've been there several times and have passed this man on the side of the road once or twice. Seemed like a nice guy. Never bothered anybody.

Lovely to see a story which celebrates the worth, decency and dignity of this honest man.

The homeless are often demonised and alienated from society, and yet many are intelligent, pleasant, and honest about the mistakes they have made.

Thanks for sharing Chuck.

$10k raised so far

That's awesome. I love when positive stories come full circle.

It's already over $10k. Hopefully he is able to use the money to get off the streets. But that's always such a hard transition in many ways. I'm really pulling for him.

I just hope he can get some (free) guidance on using the money, or it's just going to be a fun, short ride for him.

I think the exact opposite. There are appearences to keep up that a cheating woman would notice a whole lot faster than a woman not cheating. js

"My rings were bothering me, so I put them in my coin purse," Sarah Darling explained.

Riiiight... :hihi:

LOL. This thread just proves my "unpopular" opinion post that men gossip more than women. Chuck posts a really lovely story, and several presumably male posters have twisted it into something seedy. I see how you all really are. :ezbill:
