Restructuring of Drew Brees' contract now could create major headaches later (1 Viewer)

the way that this contract was set up so heavy in the back, in addition to the big dollars, its not even an option.

essentially they already structured it as if it were in that category.

It's already be stuctured to be somewhat friendly in the beginning. I doubt they even ask him to touch it. He just signed it less than a year ago, Loomis knew what was coming.

And that is the main reason why I am against modifying contracts now for cap space this year, but increasing numbers in future years.

We have to learn to live with the fact that with Drew's contract, we won't have a healthy cap situation in years to come. We may pay two or 3 stars and that is it.

For that reason, we have to be smart with our draft. We are at the point that we should not only be trying to fill holes in our roster, but getting young players to replace veterans that should live when their contracts are done.

Well tell him of he doesn't he will never win other Super Bowl. Brady redid his to help the team, your telling me drew is that selfish?? He made over 50 million last year form endorments.

What in the heck are you talking about?

These resturctures have nothing to do with selfishness. In fact, players love it because instead of salary, you get it as a signing bonus.

As part of the restructure, Brady had his 2012 base salary reduced from $5.75 million to $950,000. The team then took the remaining $4.8 million, combined it with a $6 million roster bonus due to him, and gave him a $10.8 million signing bonus.
Brady doesn't have his salary reduced, he just receives the money in a different form.

I think we're blessed to have the number one quarterback in the NFL," Kraft said of Brady. "But let's also remember, that when he restructures his deal, he's getting a big bundle of cash up-front. But it is helping us create cap room."

What we are saying is it is pointless to restructure brees right now because it was already structured to backload his contract. What we could do is add another year to the contract and spread it out more, but I doubt we do anything with it.

When it comes to drafting on defense, I'll question Loomis all day.

But when it comes to taking care of Mr. Bensons wallet and managing the cap, Loomis "The bean counter" got this!

Brady hasn't won a Super Bowl since restructuring.

I said redo contract tear it up and start over.

I doubt Loomis will touch Drew's contract. It is already so back-loaded, that pushing any money to future years could really hurt the franchise.

2013: 17.4 mil.
2014: 18.4 mil.
2015: 26.4 mil.
2016: 27.4 mil.

Only thing we could do is add another year, as poster above already said, but I doubt Drew would do this. Drew is a great player, but if he wanted to give the team a discount or a team-friendly contract he would have done it last summer.
