Pretty simple question with what is probably a pretty tough answer.

I could make a case for Lofton, Cam and Junior. In the new scheme somebody like Martez Wilson, Braylon Broughton or Tyrann Walker could really emerge.

In the past Greer and Harper could have been considered but the way they played last season it is hard to even accept them as starters.

Hicks played great as a rookie but is still very raw and delivers no pass rush. He could very well end up being our best defensive player but I don't think he is there yet.

Harper probably. He flies all over the field and has the versatility to play linebacker sometimes too. He may have been the only defender we had this season that should've made the pro bowl. His tackle numbers, sacks, passes defensed, and C on his chest speak for themselves

Cam Jordan is probably 1b. We landed on this pick hard. Dude has the makings of a perfect 3-4 end but has played well in the 4-3 too. The only thing he can't do is run cam newton and rg3 down from behind. The kid can ball

In '12 Jordan has my vote.

As for '13... I think one of our rush OLBs will be the best. I just think Payton had a chance to see this team from a "fan's" perspective, and will put a premium on rushing the passer. The Rob Ryan hire is telling.

Since we can't blitz all the time I think a pass rusher will emerge as our best defender, but I just don't know who it'll be. Could be Tez... could be Galette... could be pick #15.
I guess we'll find out.

Cameron Jordan ... already a good player and (barring injuries) still has upside.

Lofton, Cam, Hicks, Greer, and as inconsistent as he is I'll even throw P.Rob in there.

Our best defensive player last year was Cameron Jordan followed by Curtis Lofton.

Cameron led the the team in sacks with 8, 4th in tackles, 3 passes defensed and forced 3 fumbles recovering 2 himself. He played all 16 games and was our best all around defender.

after saying all that, it isn't even close as to who had the biggest impact on defense all around.

No one on our defense is head and shoulders above anyone else. Pretty sad to say that, but it's true.

Its hard to say because all the players seem to be role players, they excel in areas and are below par in others, Jordan is an excellent run defender but is below average rushing the passer, Harper is good at run defense and blitzing but below average in coverage and it goes on and on. But in his prime and 100% healthy I'd have to go with Vilma

1. Jordan
2. Bunkley
3. Lofton
4. Hawthorne
5. Tie - Hicks/Galette

If we completely ignore 2012, you gotta include Greer and Harper

8 sacks is not below average...
