BountyGate in the Rear View Mirror - A Year Later

I think enough time has passed and SP is back for me to be a little objective about this. I encourage everyone to add your thoughts.

- Pay for Performance and Bounties are gone from the NFL. This will really help the NFL against the concussion suits by the former players. I ask the SR attorneys, doesn't this help the NFL against punitive damages
- SP was the most Parcell's like rogue coach in the league. Goodell clearly established this type behavior by coaches will not be tolerated
- Goodell got more than even with SP for VicodinGate, showing up toasted for the morning after SB victory press conferences, and not acting on Goodell's P4P warnings in 2010.
- Goodell just received a 50% raise to over $29 million. This clearly says that the owners completely support Goodell's actions against SP and the Saints
- Goodell rubbed the Saints faces in the dirt by not giving the 2nd round pick back this season after the coaches and Benson seemingly abided by his conditions
- The only people negatively impacted are the Saints team and fans.

What did I miss?

I would think that after the fact changes to how you deal with player safety would only serve to inflame a jury against you. The NFL is stupid. The question will be asked: if you knew about bounty systems for the entire history of the NFL (which will be a subject of discovery) why did you wait until after the concussion lawsuits were filed to bring down the hammer? Did you not care enough about player safety before?

Like I said, the NFL is stupid.

- Perhaps, but it is sheer conjecture that this was the motivating factor behind it.
- More conjecture. Payton's behavior had little to do with the bountygate punishment.
- See above.
- Goodell's raise shows the owners support him in his role as commissioner. It says absolutely nothing about their feelings regarding bountygate. Was he given a raise "because" of bountygate, or "in spite of it"? You don't know.
- Giving back the 2nd round pick was something that we fans were hoping for, but nothing that was promised.
- Finally, something I can agree with but I don't see why you feel that this is relevant to anything. Objectively speaking, the team being punished should be the only ones that suffer.

No matter what Goodell did, P4P and Bounties are probably never going away. Stickum was banned since the 80's and the Chargers got caught with it this year

Goodell as well, since this fiasco now shows that he cannot be trusted.

Be careful checking out booty in the rear view mirror . . . you will probably to rear end somebody, and not in a good way.

Stupid thread is stupid.

With an online name like "Longhorn Saints Fan" you definitely have bipolar disorder. UT has the lamest fans and highest payed players in the NCAA. Real nice people, fun go to concert with, but opera fans cheer more passionately. I have serious emotional concerns about my son and his burnt orange t-shirt also.

Yet again the same one whining about how I shouldn't be a Longhorns fan in another thread; I mean really how low do you have to go to comment on peoples screen names "Swimmer"? That’s your opinion of the Longhorns not mine, how is that even bipolar? They aren’t even in the same league let alone same skill level and they don’t get paid.

The bounty crap has been over with yet you bring it back up why? I think you have seen several threads of this already on this forum of everyone’s opinion and you assume everyone’s opinion on it is automatically going to change?<O:p</O:p

Yes your thread is still stupid.<O:p</O:p

The most lingering effect, IMO, is when you say "I'm a Saints fan", and some loud mouth yells out "cheaters". Makes me want to get all "Casino" on him and his brother.

That reputation damage, however false, will be with us for years. Even though we saw the talking heads and journalist turn our way and start to support us, and build up the case for lies and conjecture against our team, it will last for a long, long time.

That is the only real outcome of all of this.

I was very close friends with "Coach" Royal. Coach and I played golf at Barton Creek 2-3 times a week. he was able to get the 1st tee time. He played in his cart and I played in mine. coach hated slow play. He was one the classiest people I've ever known. Any resemblance of integrity and class vanished from the the UT program when he retired. Oh, just by the way, how did VY afford a BMW in college from his roots?
