This guy has only been playing football for 3 years but appears to be a beast. At 6'8 277 pounds he ran a 4.60 40 and benched 225 38 times (Most at the combine). He was originally projected to go on day 2 but he may not make it out of the first round after his showing at the combine. He will almost certainly be there at 15 and almost certainly be gone by the 3rd round. What do you guys think about the Saints taking him at 15 or trading down to get him in the 2nd or late 1st? I would be very pleased if we could trade down and pick him up late.

Margus Hunt Draft Profile

I think his biggest down fall is that he is already 26 and will be 27 by the time training camp starts. Otherwise he is a phenomenal talent!

I'm intrigued, but very cautious.

1, he's old.

2, he's play the 5 Tech which is what Cam Jordan is likely going to play

3, I get the feeling he's a Vernon Gholston. Amazing Athelete, but just doesn't play physical.

He is 25 and will be 26 by the time TC starts but I get your point.

He lifted 225 38 times. I think that was a combine best. This guy is not going to be pushed around my only concern is how many years we can get out of him. Obviously if his career only lasts 4-5 years then we have to decide how high of a pick is worth that.

Do ya'll realize how strong you have to be to bench press 225 38 times at that height? I was a competitive powerlifter in my 20's. I'm 5'6" so obviously I have short arms which is ideal for bench pressing. The most reps I ever put up at 225 was 26 and my 1 rep max was 410 so I had a little better than average strength but I could have never in my life touched 38 reps. Now I understand that being able to bench press a ton of weight does not mean you are a great football player but my God that dude is as strong as a bear.

A 4-5 year career would be fine with me considering his rookie contract would only be four years anyway. IMO, when drafting players in the early rounds, you're only looking at what they can do for you for their first contract anyway, because after that it's a crap shoot with free agency. Late round picks and UDFAs are a different story in that they're so cheap and are usually all projects anyway (unless it's O-linemen for us :hihi:)

Agreed. Besides, age is less of a factor on DL than it is at RB. Guy could still have a productive career. Draft is a gamble anyway. The real question is where does he fit in our newly undiagnosed D?

That doesn't tell you how physical he is, though. He looks good on a few plays every game and then disappears, mainly because he plays high and often gets blown up. Go watch a couple of SMU games -- about one time in ten he destroys his guy; the other nine he looks lost or loses leverage and does nothing. He's a virtual non-presence against the run.

I wouldn't touch him in the top two rounds, even if we ran a 4-3, for which he's far better suited. There are too many guys available who are already good at football to take a freak who won't really understand his position until he's about 30 and starting to lose the very talent that made him worth drafting in the first place.

I admit I have seen no SMU games in their entirety but I have also not read one draft profile of Margus Hunt that suggest in any way shape or form that he takes plays off. I have read the weakness about his height working against him due to leverage but seen nothing that suggest he has a bad motor.

Strengths
Tall, thick but athletic lineman with loads of potential. Much quicker than you’d expect off the snap given his size, and his long first step helps him pressure the outside shoulder of tackles when outside and win the gap at three-technique. Shows the ability to anchor from both the 3-tech and 5-tech spots. Has the speed to run the arm and beat tackles off the edge. Fast and strong hands stun his man, extends his arms to keep leverage. Uses his length very well to keep blockers off his body. Plays contain well on the edge, pops off his block and swallows backs with his strong upper body. Long strides eat a lot of grass when closing to the quarterback. Good closing speed. Will chase plays downfield. Height and length allow him to affect quarterbacks’ vision when unable to reach him; they also make him an ideal interior player on the field goal block team. Flashes the ability to come off the ball hard and low in short-yardage situations despite his height. Good natural strength – can anchor and shed even when he loses the leverage battle. Varies the tempo of his pass rush well once the offensive line overplays his speed rush.

Weaknesses
Must be cognizant to play with bend due to his height, pops up off the snap and will stand upright during the play if tired, losing leverage. Agile for his size, but is still a linear athlete with questionable change of direction and flexibility. More mobile quarterbacks and quick running backs will elude him in the backfield. Turning the corner on his initial pass rush is a chore due to his bulk. Still learning the game, must find the ball consistently. Older than most prospects (will be 25). Doesn't bring his body when he tackles and subsequently misses a lot. Ineffective bull rush due to not playing with leverage and lacks counters when his initial move fails.
