State Judge Strikes Down CCC Tolls (1 Viewer)

I think this is what Bono was talking about when he wrote Pride (in the name of love). With some chunky Wanker standing at the Gen Degaul on ramp waving the Louisiana flag like he is carrying the American flag at the Olympics.

Special election? Only the motivated will turn out to vote. The motivated equals "I don't want to pay tolls on a bridge."

I wouldn't mind paying tolls if we could see where the money was going. The CCC police are gone. The ferries aren't funded by the bridge anymore. Upkeep of the bridge and all other bridges in state are paid for by state. I would even be willing to pay a lower toll to account for the need for less revenue since these things are no longer funder by the tolls. However, bridge users are being asked to pay the same toll for the next twenty years without a recognizable plan for the money being collected. That is just outrageous.

The tolls are suspended from now until the May 4 election. Once the public gets a taste of freedom from the CCC tolls, there's no looking back. The pro-toll cause is doomed.

I grew up in Algiers so given the choice of going to the Westbank or to Metairie/Kenner for things I can't get around the house I almost exclusively choose the Westbank. That said, I will be voting to end the tolls and should I be on the winning side I'm sure my trips over there will become more frequent.

To put things in perspective. In New York they just raised the toll to cross the Verrazano Bridge to $15.

Never understood the whining over a buck.

I've heard some say that removing the tolls will actually create more traffic, as everyone will have to merge together all at once just past the plazas instead of the folks with toll tags being able to zoom past in their own lanes. It's kind of interesting that this theory will be put to the test before the special election. The only way it gets passed in a special election is if this does somehow lead to massive traffic congestion for everyone

At the end of the day, it's less about the actual impact of paying a buck (or 40 cents with a tag) than it is about the principle of paying for something everyone else in the state gets for free.

For me, it's not about the buck. It's about where the money goes, and the politicians who are leading the public to believe that the bridge would fall under disrepair and the lights would go out if the tolls weren't extended. Those politicians and those public officials who have supported the tolls have not been truthful about where the money goes.

I'd be more than happy to support the $1 toll if 100% of the money went to useful things like infrastructure, but I can't say that's true.

The other problem I have is the fact that the vote was for a TWENTY YEAR EXTENSION. That's completely unnecessary. That alone reeks of corruption. The toll extensions should be for four years and appear on every presidential election ballot.

+100000000000

I don't think anyone would mind paying a toll if we knew exactly how the funds were being used.

Also, here is my interaction with the CCC: I got a ticket in the mail two weeks ago for a citation from November. Apparently my toll tag did not register when I passed through. So what happened? A $1 fee went to $51 because of a $25 administration fee and a $25 late fee. Even though I JUST got the letter. Not to mention that my toll tag is registered to my license plate for this specific reason....

Those that only have a scant few bucks understand it all too well. On the Golden Gate or Verrazano they can charge outrageous tolls because people have a lot of money in those places and will pay it. Louisiana is a poor state by comparison and a "buck" meand a lot to some. If politicians were getting bounced because of it the toll would shrink.
