I hoping the Saints come to terms with Vilma, Smith and Harper… Without them, we really have no veteran experience on that side of the ball. However, I would like to see Smith and Harper take on tweener roles. Depending on the package, let Harper and Smith play OLB while rotating Smith at DE and DT. Move Jenkins SS and acquire FS via free agency.

Time for Smith to roll. Love fresh prince to death but he is just not good anymore. Vilma still provides SOME value to the team as far as production, not great, but I think we'd be better with him than without him. Same for Harper, but just not at that cost.

As much as I like Vilma, I am not sure he can produce at a high level in a 3-4. I think, performance-wise, he may be the first to go.

What are you saying?! Smith has LOTS of TACKLES, that means obviously that he is a greatly productive defensive lineman!

Returning to seriousness i think it's high time for smith to walk (or go sit on a sofa for all i care). Not sure about vilma's future productivity (nor harper's) but if they can be retained at a minimum price..eh..i'll have to like and hope

I question it too, but I would still give it a shot. I would structure a contract that wouldnt hurt us if we have to cut him in training camp.

Sorry but if we can free up upwards of 20mil in cap space to rid ourself's of the "under performers" and bring in "good performers", I will take it.

They have had thier shot, we need more 3-4 minded guys anyways.

Out of all the three Smith is least likely to be an abysmal failure. Moving to the 3-4 caters to a declining Smith(if thats even true) more than either of the other ones in reality. There is no possible way to be sure that an older Vilma can excel in this 3-4 or have issues particularly his ongoing health issues. Harper has literally no versatility at all and the scheme has to pay particular attention to his strengths for him to succeed at all.

3 (players) x 20 (estimated number of years said players have been with the Saints) - 40 (random number to make the salary cap logic effective) = 20 million.



Simple. Logic.

Harper as an OLB? Smith as a DT? No thanks. I can see restructuring Harper and maybe restructuring Smith to play DE but that is it. I personally think we need to cut bait with Smith and if Harper doesn't take a pay cut he can take a walk too.
