Per Larry Holder, Will Smith took a $6Million pay cut that lowers his cap figure from $14M to $8M. That's only for this year. Next year remains unchanged, with a cap hit, I think, of $14M.

Vilma had his base pay cut, eliminated his roster bonus, and increased his workout bonus, for net cap reduction of $4.8 million.

So there were actual pay cuts for both guys, not just restructures. I think these moves will prove to be good ones for the team.

Yes just like what was posted in the other thread. Smith and Vilma both took major paycuts to stay. Continue to hate on saints report.

Win/win for all parties. I'd say the (over)reaction by the board last night was a bit premature. This is actually good news.

What would be next year's cap hit for cutting Smith?

Smith gets cut next year

VERY possible. But for now, we kind of need him. You simply can't cut everyone. You have to actually have players to field a team. With the cap hit he and Vilma carry, on or off the roster, we might as well find a way to keep them, or else we would be even more handcuffed.

I have also heard that Smith gets his 1mill roster bonus on top of his new 3mill salary this year. According to a post on pft.

It's in the link I put up. That was in the original contract, and it was left alone, didn't change:
Smith was scheduled to earn $10.15 million in cash compensation in 2013, including a $1 million roster bonus on the 15th day of the league year, a $9 million base salary and a $150,000 workout bonus. Smith was scheduled to count $14.502 million against the cap. In the renegotiated deal, Smith's $1 million roster bonus and $150,000 workout bonus remain, but his salary has been reduced to $3 million, a $6 million pay cut that lowers his cap number to $8.502 million for the upcoming season.

IMO it was a good deal for both guys, you don't see any production out of them this year let vilma walk next year and just cut smith next.... and you can say at least they gave him a shot in the new scheme plus it will give the new guys at least a year with the new system.

win-win for the players and organization. Both are aging and on the decline, but both are locker room leaders as well. Looking forward to the rest of free agency and the draft....

What would be next year's cap hit for cutting Smith?

about 3.5 million if he's cut (or retires)

about 14 million if everything stays as is

- But if he has a really good year and everyone wants to move forward it could easily be changed. Only thing that can't change is the 3.5 million

Asked and looked through a diff thread, don't see it. What was total savings this year if smith would have been cut? Same with vilma?

If nothing else, they will serve as great depth and leadership for us.

Man, I wish I could get a pay cut and still make $8 million. :)
