Bushrod signed a 5 year contract and Daniel a 3 year.

I guess at least we should be getting a 3rd next year. Something to consider.

Right now, a third or fourth round supplemental pick, I am thinking for Bushrod. And maybe a sixth rounder for Daniel. But I will admit, I am no expert whatsoever on determining the supplemental picks.

A third round compensation pick is reserved for really high priced free agent losses like Mario Williams getting his huge contract. The compensation is basically connected to the value of the contract. So, no we won't be getting a 3rd for Bushrod. My guess is a 5th at best for Bushrod and a 7th for Daniel. Of course we only get compensated if our losses are bigger than our gains.

The contract is 5 year and almost 36 million total. I think will give us a 4th and hope maybe a 3rd.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

Bushrod isn't even the highest free agent OT signed so far, and he's certainly not the highest paid free agent signed. I just don't see him getting us a 3rd. Just my opinion though.

It would more than likely result in a 5th round compensatory pick. But if we don't sign anyone, it's clear we would be picking in the top 10 picks of every round if that makes you feel any better. You can't return 10 starters off the worst defense in NFL history and expect to be better.

I guess I should post this in here as well.

This is a thread I started in January explaining how compensatory picks work

http://saintsreport.com/forums/f2/widely-assumed-4th-round-compensatory-pick-285732/#.UUCUZxwW2VN

So given that Bushrod has been signed to the same level of contract we gave Ben Grubbs and as a result of the Ben Grubbs loss the Ravens will get a 4th round pick then.....

If Bushrod is not replaced through free agency then at this point it'd be fairly accurate to surmise we will receive a 4th round selection.

Daniel at this point will be a 6th rounder based on contracts paid to guys who equated as 6th round compensation losses for their former teams.

Did we get anything for Nicks from last year?

No we replaced him.

The round of the pick awarded is primarily determined by the annual value of the contract signed. Signed players cancel out lost players with equal contracts, then lower contracts, before canceling out higher contracts.

There's no way to know this early into free agency or this far in advance.

That is why I am writing on the title "In case we don't sign anyone", I am just curious to understand how the compensatory picks work, since we never get one.

Thanks Ross, very informative!

We got a couple weeks to go before we can accurately get a feel for this.

Dude, read the title again. I wrote "In case we don't sign anyone".

The goal of this thread is for me to understand better how compensatory picks work, not to predict what is going to happen.
