Photography for my CD (1 Viewer)

Sorry for not putting this in the original thread, but it's kind of a diferent part of the topic.

I want a decent cover photo -- so.....I asked a professional photographer friend ... 232 dollar sitting fee, which I kind of understand....but then she said that there is a licensing fee for every copy...

So I pay 232 for a sitting fee which I know will be done well and then I think I pay for a digital copy and then for each copy I produce from the CD production company, I have to pay a licensing fee. She said she typically charges 50 dollars for a one time use like a t shirt. So if it's on the cover AND the CD, I pay for that...I guess. I haven't called her back.

Not sure I am down with this -- for example, the songs we do, I own 100 percent -- the recordings, etc...all of it are my property.

Nah. That seems like a 1-time fee kind of deal. Not a per CD Liscensing fee type of thing. I'm no expert on photography, but I would get a second opinion...or maybe go with someone a little less notable. Possibly even a college student who might be looking to get their name out there.

I dunno, I'd be hard pressed to believe that if you pay 232 bucks for a picture that you can't make copies of your own picture and do what you want with them.

You shouldn't expect to own the copyright if you're only paying $232 to a professional photographer. Instead of individual copy fees you should obtain rights for a certain number of albums and establish pricing for more if needed.

Exactly. You do the work in creating a recording of an audio file, and you own the copyright. Every time someone wants to make a copy of it, they have to pay you. By comparison, she does the work in creating a recording of a still image, and she owns the copyright. Every time you want to make a copy of it, you have to pay her.

I'm guessing you never hired a wedding photographer, then.

But, in all seriousness. You aren't paying $232 for a picture. You are paying $232 for the photographer's work in creating the setting, setting up the lights, and recording the moment in her camera. After that, you pay for the physical photograph.

In this case, I'd try to negotiate (as another poster said), a single fee for a fixed number of licenses, with the option to buy more licenses as needed in the future for a set amount.
