I'm looking for a ballpark price for a wooden privacy fence. This would be a six foot tall straight down the property line about 500 feet fence. Basic design, nothing fancy. Any ideas on how much this would be installed?

Cost abt $11ft wholesale. I think the going rate is 13.50.

go with vinyl. i did..no staining every few years..can take the wind a lot better as well. a bit more pricey but well worth it in the long run.

I Can't stress enough to make sure it is installed properly. Most people short take short cuts and pay in the long run.

Vinyl always seems to be the first fences to go in hurricanes and tropical storms. I would never get one after seeing how many go down in storms. I think it has to do with the fact that there are no spaces for airflow.

Just a suggestion, How about going with a chain-link fence and then getting a tennis court style tinted sheet/tarp attached to fence. May lose tarp in hurricane but that can be easily replaced. Chain-link fence should hold.

He may want it to look nice.

This! Especially when it comes to putting your posts in the ground. If you try to cut corners, you fence. Will just fall over like a house of cards next time your neighbor farts near it.

I had a fence replaced last year. It had metal poles and spruce pickets. $17 a linear foot.

Pine-- around $14 ft
Cedar-- around up to $20+ft

it probably depends where you live, but these are about right.

Just got pricing to replace my double gate of $400 and while he was there, he said going rate for dog-eared pine was $14/linear foot. ( idk what the difference is between linear or actual foot, just his terminology )

Also the distance between each post. It doesn't take long to figure out it is much easier to stretch the distance between each post a couple extra feet which drastically weakens the fence. A properly installed wood fence should be able to hold up to category 1 wind speeds without any damage or leaning.

My dad is a landscape contractor in Baton Rouge and builds fences. You should hear some of the horror stories he has told me in the past about these high dollar fences that he came behind and had to completely rebuild after a year or two.

He finds that most people installing fence don't put enough concrete in the post holes, water the concrete down way too much, don't pack the soil back around the post holes, use second quality wood, stretch the post lengths out a few extra feet, don't run the posts dead level or in a perfectly straight line, use cheap nails and screws that rust out, etc.

The problem is the going rate to have a fence installed is low because of competition that most places start cutting corners to remain competitive in pricing and quality suffers.

Linear foot is just the length between points. If you want 500' feet of fence that is the same as 500' linear feet. Linear is just used so it is not mistaken with price per square foot.
