this is pretty cool. i have never come across this. great footage. one thing to notice, look at the difference of pocket presence and overall technique of kilmer compared to manning. nice seeing clear footage of the old unis, too.

i DESPISED him as our O.C., loved him as a player.

Always my favorite player. Met him once at a golf course when he was well past his playing days. He was total class. Great Saint!

Check out the play at 2:00 ... 1971 game at the Astrodome.

Footage also gives you a great history of the Saints uniforms from 67-72, Tulane Stadium with and without artificial turf, and the QBs ... Kilmer, Manning, Hargett (#14), and the other #14 (against the Cowboys) is Karl Sweetan.

Thank you for posting.

Thank you for posting that. Danny was my childhood hero.

Mine too. Sure wish i still had my Danny and Archie autographed picture. Think it was lost in my moms attic in lakeview.

Oh, and I love those unis

Danny was my favorite saint as a kid too. The first saints game I ever went to was the last game in 1969 against Pittsburg. Danny was tied for the lead in receiving with two other players. He caught enough passed to win the title, we beat the Steelers, Danny got kicked in the behind by one of the Steelers, the benches cleared and a brawl was on! Doug Atkins retired after the game. Awesome memory.

^ Yes.

Thanks for posting Groovepro. Great to see Kilmer fling the ball to Danny, again.

I'm still not sure who the scouts were that talked the coaching staff into drafting a short, somewhat heavy set white guy that runs about a 5.1 40 to play WR. Never was really sure if they should have been commended or fired.

But he sure was fun to watch. I wasn't old enough to watch him live but grew up listening to my dad talk about him and watching old games.

Couple of plays reminded me of Colston catching the ball then getting clubbered in the middle. But the ball still in his hands. Awesome. Thank you.

Well, considering he was drafted in the 17th round and played as well as he did, at least one scout knew what he was doing. He was fun to watch. Great hands and never went down easy.

You could tell how long ago that was when Danny himself (as a rookie) said "I was drafted to play SPLIT END." How long has it been since "split ends" (not the kind in the hair commercials) have been referred to as "wide receivers?"

I wish you would have had a chance to watch Danny play. He was the true embodiment of playing football for fun. I think he and Steve Gleason are the 2 Saints who would have played the game for free.

As Dan In Lafayette pointed out, the draft was 17 rounds back then.. and Danny was picked in the 17th round at #420. He might very well have been the 40th rated receiver that year. He barely made the team, once refusing to leave when Fears informed him he was cutting him:

"I'm not leaving," he told Fears after being instructed to turn in his playbook. "You haven't even given me a chance."

"You're serious, aren't you?" the coach said. Fears agreed to give him more time. Kilmer agreed to throw him as many passes as he could in the final pre-season game and he made the team.

Guys like Danny were the heart and soul of the old Saints.. they made it easy to be a fan.
