Im not sure if we could have picked a worse season to let Bushrod walk. What are our realistic options at OT with only 3.3 million wiggle room under the cap?

I looked up some of the lower-end Offensive Tackles on the market. Anybody got any insights about these bargain basement specials?

  • Eric Winston - who is probably the best name on this list, but also probably going back to the Dolphins.
  • Jason Smith – cut by the Jets and considered a draft bust
  • Wayne Hunter - Going on 32 - Rams' third tackle last season - back and knee issues.
  • Guy Whimper – called a “whipping boy” by Jaguars fans on occasion
  • Demetress Bell – some guy who was 2nd on Eagles depth chart
  • Jeremy Bridges - 32-year-old waived the panthers last year cause he wasn't in football shape
  • Trai Essex – cut in the middle of last season by the colts
  • Quinn Ojinnaka – another one cut by the rams
So unless you can come up with another creative option, what would ya'll prefer to do:
a. draft and start a rookie at Bushrods old position

b. go with either strief or brown (note that payton has not said he has plans for doing this)

c. pick up one of these guys above

PS: and please dont give me a half-azz solution like "cut Roman Harper"...because its not about the money - aside from mckinnie, it just about the lack of available talent out there at the OT spot...

PPS: I do think Jammal Brown is still on the market - bet he prolly wants a lot of $

The only guy on there worth a look is Jason Smith. He actually played well for the Jets. He got cut for salary cap reasons, not play, as he was entering the final year of his massive rookie deal.

That's scary bro...just plain scary...

eric winston, mckinnie, ryan harris, and max starks could also be cheap stop gap options considering how the market is right now.

We've already invested draft picks into this exact situation... time to let them cut their teeth and make a run at the starting job. We didn't think Bushrod would be ready either and he turned out alright. Of course, then we had Kromer. Hopefully the worst way to describe this situation will be "interesting".

As I recall, Payton didn't say he wouldn't play Brown, but he was passive aggressive in his comments about "being available". He was obviously referring to him being injury prone. Payton did the same thing to PT a couple of years ago. I think he's challenging him to play through pain.

My guess is, we draft someone to push him, or to outright start. I don't think we sign any of the guys on this list unless there is a camp injury & if one of these guys are available by then. I would also expect us to pick up a couple of undrafted FAs after the draft.

I think he will sign a vet. He said the LT spot is empty right now. I think we will sign a vet but give Brown every chance to win the starting postion.

I'm starting to think we don't have much room to do much more with our cap room and that we'll do what we can in the draft and let Brown and Marcel Jones fight it out for LT. We don't know what Mickey Loomis can still do to give us more cap space but I'm not sure I'd want it done. I've looked to see what our cap space is like next year and the following year and I'm worried. We need a good draft this year more than ever

Max Starks - thats a good option! The steelers are not expected to renew his contract and its DIRT cheap, like less than one mil.
