Does anyone else get a Jevon Kearse feel from him? Or is he not up to those standards yet?

I am not on the draft Barkevious Mingo bandwagon, but seeing him, seeing his build and speed...it reminds me of when Jevon was coming out of Florida wrecking havoc, bringing hell. What I would give to get a Kearse type defender here.

My initial study of him had me not wanting to touch him, then I went back to the 2011 footage of him and he was a totally different player. LSU used him differently and he didn't get to pin his ears back as much. I saw him playing a lot of contain and he ran into the flats a lot. Also, there was a lot of 3-man rushes and that isn't a formula for getting pressure on the QB. He's without a doubt has the most potential of any pass rusher in this draft and if he were there at #15, I'd be elated to have him as a Saint.

Start him off as a nickel down player and just tell him to find the QB (like the Niners did with Aldon Smith his rookie year). Simplify things for him in his first year and play to his strengths, then increase his role in the second year. Coaching will play a huge part in his development.

No. Not in the least. Kearse produced in college and actually wreaked havoc.
I won't deny that Mingo might have the most potential of all the pass rushers in this draft , however.......he is the worst tackler of the bunch. The main thing I see about him when I watch any game film , even his highlight videos.......his "angles" are BY FAR the worst i've seen in years. I have never seen a man miss so man sacks/tackles due not just because of poor angles.......but down right legitly bad ones. Now once he gets moved to the 3-4 and he can stand up an see where he is going it might flick some switch in him and he'll be a world beater. But for right now.......the tape says he's all athlete and not football player. Hopefully that changes

Great post i agree, LSU used im terribly, as a 4-3 strongside end, when he's a 3-4 weakside olb... makes no sense.

He's nowhere near the athlete Kearse was. Kearse ran the same 40 time as Mingo at the combine while outweighing him by 20 points. His 20-yard shuttle was substantially faster than Mingo's. Then Kearse threw up a 4.43 at his pro day. Kearse was The Freak because he ran like a once-a-decade linebacker despite weighing as much as a 4-3 end. Mingo runs like a once-a-year linebacker at the weight of a 4-3 linebacker.

If you're looking for college DEs to compare him to, look no further than the raft of undersized ends FSU has cranked out over the years. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they bust. Scheme is unusually important.

DeMarcus Ware comes to mind when I think of Mingo. I'm sure wherever he ends up that he'll b utilized properly at an OLB position unlike the foolish Les Miles who clearly had him outta position

Agree ^^^...What does it say about Mingo Not doing the Bench Press at his pro day? Is he going to get man-handled by the NFL O-Linemen.. I Don't trust the Mingo pick, I hope he's gone when pick 15 comes around ,again JMO

This defense needs a game changer.

At 15 the only chance we have at landing a game changer is to draft a guy like Mingo and develop them. With Payton back we'll be drafting even later next year. Sure there is risk but even the safest picks don't work out, just look at Ellis and the direction Jenkins career is headed. We have a coach that knows his OLB's, let's get him one!

I seriously can not get behind this way of thinking. At 15 I don't want someone that needs to be "developed". At NO POINT in college was Mingo EVER a game changer. I will MAYBE give you the Clemson bowl game at the end of last season.........but we lost that game cause we couldn't get to the QB when it mattered most. Mingo is athletically superior to most of the guys at his position , but he's not a football player.
The reason I say I don't want to "develop" Mingo is simple. I don't want to waste a pick on a guy where the development process is so far behind it would take a few years for him to actually start really helping us out. Mingo has played 4 years of High School and 3 years of college and you're gonna tell me in those 7 years of football you haven't learned to take proper angles? That's football 101. My god...........go watch his film and tell me those angles aren't horrific. Then go watch Dion Jordan and his angles. There is a distinct difference.
He's also weak. LSU has one of if not the best strength and conditioning program in the country........and you still don't have the strength to take on blockers? His red flags outweigh his potential. I'd rather a player like Jarvis Jones or Ogletree. They have red flags , but at least I know they can play football and produce. Mingo has not shown me such evidence.

Now i'm not bashing Mingo , he could make the switch to 3-4 outside lb and become a beast , and if he does i'll come back and say i was wrong , but I highly doubt he pans out in the nfl. He's an athlete , not a football player. Horrible tackling form , and the worst angles i've ever seen. His form and angles are bad because he is so weak and gets easily pushed around. And don't give me the argument that Rob Ryan will magically fix that. Chavis couldn't get through to him for 3 years , so what makes you think Ryan would? There are other options in this draft , no pick is a sure bet , but some are more sure than others and Mingo is fighting DJ Fluker for the top spot of unsafest player to take in the first round.

Everyone has flaws. Aldon Smith didn't get a sack for almost the entire 2nd half of the season. There are few "pass rushers" that you can send out there and they get sacks (Jared Allen, Freeney a few years ago, JPP, and Ware come to mind).

The others have to be in a scheme that takes advantage of their skills, and play off the talent around them. Aldon Smith is the perfect example... he was useless without a healthy Justin Smith.

Mingo can add a dimension of SPEED and RELENTLESSNESS to the front 7, which can disrupt things for the offense and help our secondary.

I'm not advocating for us to take him... but those that think Mingo is gonna go out there and challenge Strahan's record in his rookie year... it won't happen.

I completely agree with what your saying. He can totally add a dimension of speed and relentlessness.......but that's all he can give you. At some point you have to know how to use that speed and relentlessness to become an asset to your team , and he he hasn't shown that he has the ability to put it all together. I want a guy that you can at least depend on to give you average production. Maybe not a world beater , but you know he's gonna go give you something every game.
When Mingo can use his speed and relentlessness to do something more than be the 3rd or 4th guy to get in on the tackle and give me a sack every once in a while then i'll consider him a first rounder......maybe. But not right now. This dude is radioactive. A guy with all the potential in the world that never once showed it in college , or that really has no transferable pluses about him moving up from the college ranks is not someone you should take in the 1st.

Having Galette, Butler, Wilson, and Mingo @ OLB would collectively be a young athletic group with much potential, imo. LT is an issue @ the moment but if Mingo is BPA, I like the possibility.
