For starters, I think Sean Payton's playcalling is effective beyond question. There is no way we could move the ball like we do without his brilliant playcalling.

The coach doesn't fumble the ball, and the coach doesn't throw interceptions. I here people arguments in favor of Deuce and Reggie not getting enough carries.

And this is argument brings about our #1 problem.

I'm fine with Deuce's carries, and I'm fine with Reggies carries, I just think that we get to cute in the Red Zone.

Teams Like KC and SD hide no cards when they get to the red zone. They may throw one or two passes, but for the most part, they pound the ball with their great backs and make you stop them.

No matter Reggie or Deuce, I think we need to pound the ball more in the Red Zone. We have over 100 million Dollars invested in the running back position, we should start showing teams why.

Reggie has been doing a much better job running down hill, and we all know what Deuce can do. We probably would put more points on the board if we played more smashmouth football in the redzone.

Thoughts????????????

You won't get many arguements because you are 100% correct!

I agree... we only ran the ball 23 times... and passed like 53...I know we were trailing but i think we would be more effective if we played smashmouth football in the red zone

Another thing though the one time we got in the red zone and we tried to run it we got stuffed 3 times and kicked a field goal

the playcalling on offense is awesome... that is not our problem...our problem is the turnover and overs and overs and overs every game... if they keep that up this season is headed for the crapper

We did 'pound'...

we got stopped. They were ready for Deuce. :(

We needed some play action to get the TD instead of the field goal.
I'm for keeping the defense guessing, not trying to prove that we have an ineffective running game in the red zone.

Great point.. but the one time we did try to pound it in the red zone we couldn't gain 3 yards on 2 downs.

So there's the catch... when we don't run it Payton gets criticized for not running it.

When we run it we don't get it... and Payton gets criticized for not passing.

Sooner or later there has to be some accounability placed on the players to execute.

we cant run the ball to the right and thus teams know we are predictable down in the redzone. look at all of deuce's red zone touchdowns -- they're all on the left side behind J Brown.

I like play-action calls out to the side in the red zone, like the Copper touchdown last week.

Deuce NEVER got any rhythm. 2 carries a quarter? What is that? Of course he's going to be ineffective.

And like I've said before, as soon as the other team has more points than the Saints, Payton drops the entire run game until we have the lead again, and if the lead isn't satisfactory enough he still goes primarily pass. It's painful to watch.

I keep reading about everyone wanting to run the ball...we are moving the ball at will on everyone....the problem is that when we get in the red zone the pass is easier to defend so we should run but do you guys remember that is one of our downfalls the o-line. we hide it very well and they are doing a good job but our o-line is the problem in the run game we are hiding it good with the dump passes. our coach knows this and has not much of a choice but to run this type of offence whitch by the way is not why we lost. we lost on three plays three mistakes by brees. LOVE YA BREES so lets get it together next week and kick some atlanta a**

Just a thought; the lack of a consistent threat at TE in the redzone may contribute to our woes inside the 20.

I too would like to see more play-action near the goal line with passes going to a TE slipping behind the Defense. Happens to our D all the time:)

Let's just always score our touchdowns from outside the 20 yard line, then all this would just be a moot point! :hihi:

I think as fans some of us have let the success through the first half of the season go to our heads. This is, without a doubt, a team that is still a work in progress. We have known all year long that the offensive line, which was essentially completely remade from last year, was better at pass blocking than run blocking. It's true we have a pair of quality running backs, but no running back is going to be effective without good blocking on the line.

With that said, it's hardly time to throw the season out. We move the ball as well as any team in the league, and we have a quarterback and a coach who have proven themselves adept at making adjustments. Today was a bad game. That's it. I say thank goodness our two worst performances came against AFC teams, which hardly hurts at all in the standings. We're still in first place; we still completely control our own destiny...and if we beat the Falcons in Atlanta next week, we still are on track to go no worse than 10-6 by winning nothing more than all the rest of our home games.

I agree... Brees has been near perfect all season. He just picked a bad day to have his worst day.

I still love Brees also. I don't think any coach are fan can be hadrer on Brees than he will be on himself.

i think our biggest problem is 'lack of talent'. yes, we have it in the skill positions and that is great and is an outstanding building block. but we dont have the horses on the offensive line to push people around. our production now (i believe), is the product of great coaching and player effort. problem is, to beat people in obivious running downs we need to physically beat people and our line has a problem doing it. i'm not 'hating' or 'trashing' the o-line. i think they've played wonderfully and are playing as well as a Brown - Nesbit - Faine - Evans - Stinchcomb unit can play.

our talent is also lacking on the 'D'. we have virtually no playmakers on that side of the ball outside of Grant and Smith (at times), and we could stand improvement there even. again, not 'hating' the D. They've overachieved so far this year from good coaching, effort, and smarter players. Add some more beast-ly D talent, hopefully in the back 7 and we'll see some big improvement.

We're very predictable and the fact that we're moving the ball is a testament to the defenses we're playing against, albeit not one in their favor. How often does it need to be said? Balance is NECESSARY to win football games, especially in those that are or are expected to be offensive shootouts. This isn't your John Madden 200x where you can do the same thing all game on some AI and come out with a 50-point win.
