Film Room: Cossell and Caplan look at pass rusher prospects (1 Viewer)

Not the biggest endorsement of Mingo.

Here's the link they did on LB's, some of the OLB's we'd also look at. Also ILB's.

Film Room: LB Prospects

Much more glowing review of Jones than Mingo in terms of being a pass rusher.

I dont know what to think on those guys anymore.

It makes me want Ansah or Jarvis Jones.

I dont see Jones being dominant like a Demarcus Ware even if he maxes out his potential. At best I see a Cameron Wake type of player, at worst Justin Houston.

I'd be damn happy with either.

Mingo, is just hard to figure out. You see some traits there, but I wonder if he has the frame to bulk up? I dont see it. He has the arm length and athleticism to be a Demarcus Ware, but I dont know if he will ever have core stregth (especially in the run game). At best, you get a D.Ware, at worst, you get Aaron Maybin.

Lol...that's a pretty wide range: boom to bust and everything in-between.

LOL, thats just how I see him. I damn sure could be wrong he just be a solid player throughout his NFL career.

But I think athletically, his ceiling is as high as it gets, but he could definetily be a guy who is looking for a job in a few years.

I think Cossel's right that Mingo's slight build will hurt him in the NFL. He also often fails to finish when rushing the QB, which is a concern of mine. Finally, he just didn't put up the numbers at LSU this season that he should have. I have no idea where he is on the Saints' board, but if he's the only option left on their board at the OLB position rated as a first-round talent when pick #15 is on the clock, then I hope the FO has the opportunity to trade down and possibly get a second round pick.

I agree with you...which is why I just don't see the Saints drafting him. The Saints need a player with a higher probability of success at 15, even if they drop down into the late-20's/early-30's I wouldn't see the Saints taking him for that reason.

Another comparison that might be made would be with Bruce Irvins, last year. But again, Irvins is a larger player, at least 10-15 pounds heavier, and maybe a tad bit faster. And Irvins is in a special situation in Seattle in that he is a playing a very specialized position, just rush the passer. Not many teams can afford that luxury.

I do see Mingo having a role similar to Irvin initially. But at this point, Irvin was a better pure pass rusher, even as a prospect than Mingo. ...and he was considered a reach.

Mingos build hurts him less if he is assigned to be an outside linebacker than if he is slotted at D-end in a 4-3. At minimum he would be in a 3 man rotation any way, he will likely receive limited, targeted snaps at worst, or become a full blown starter at best killing rotation due to stellar play.

I just want to trade down and draft two of them, give us better odds, I would love to also have Margus Hunt because a guy his size and athletic ablity on the inside would make it tough on opposing QBs, he would be like a shot blocker inside .
